Norwich at America 250

Since 1819, Norwich University has prepared leaders for moments that require courage, judgment, service, and responsibility. As America marks 250 years, the Norwich charge continues.

Our Place in the American Story

For 207 of America's 250 years, Norwich University has prepared leaders for a changing nation. Founded in 1819 by Captain Alden Partridge, the University challenged conventional ideas about higher education by insisting that students develop intellectually, physically, and morally—not as separate pursuits, but as one education.

That conviction continues today. Through the Corps of Cadets and civilian student experience alike, Norwich prepares graduates who serve in the military, business, engineering, healthcare, education, public safety, government, and communities across the country. While their paths differ, they share a belief that leadership is measured by responsibility, service, and the willingness to step forward when others need them.

A Legacy of Service

Norwich’s America 250 story connects our founding purpose to our continuing role in preparing citizen-leaders for service, responsibility, and leadership in a changing nation. Captain Alden Partridge believed education should be active, practical, and tied to public purpose — an idea that still shapes Norwich through experiential learning, leadership development, service, and the expectation that students learn by doing, in and out of the classroom.

Today, Norwich students and alumni serve in many ways: in uniform, in communities, in classrooms, in hospitals, in public safety, in cybersecurity, and in civic life. Their stories show that service is not confined to one path. It is a way of leading.
