BG Mark A. Denton '97: 57th Commandant and Vice President for Student Affairs
Norwich University welcomes its 57th Commandant of the Corps of Cadets and Vice President for Student Affairs to campus as he prepares to lead the student body beginning in the fall semester.
Norwich University marked a milestone in its storied history Friday, June 5, as COL Mark A. Denton, USA (Ret.), Class of 1997, was promoted to brigadier general in the Vermont State Militia and formally assumed duties as the 57th Commandant of the Corps of Cadets and Vice President for Student Affairs.
The promotion ceremony took place at noon inside White Memorial Chapel and was immediately followed by a change of command ceremony on the steps of Jackman Hall on the Upper Parade Ground. BG Denton succeeds BG William McCollough '91, VSM, who served in this role for the past four years.
"The competition for this job was incredibly tough," said LtGen John J. Broadmeadow '83, USMC (Ret.), 25th President of Norwich University. "It was a coveted position. Among this very talented group, this man stood out. Through is service to our country as a soldier, through his love for his family, and through his dedication to this school."
The appointment represents a full-circle moment for BG Denton, who first walked the Norwich campus as a cadet more than three decades ago. He returns now not as a visitor, but as a steward of the institution that shaped him as he is now charged with guiding the Corps of Cadets and supporting all of Norwich's students through some of the most formative years of their lives.
"This transition is not about me, it is really about continuity — the legacy of this institution," said BG Denton during his remarks at his promotion. "LtGen Broadmeadow: Sir, thank you for your immense confidence and trust in me; I am deeply humbled. You have my word, my team and I will work, lead, and give everything we have every single day to safeguard and honor that trust."
"By instilling respect and elite excellence in our students today, we ensure that the future leaders of America are fully equipped to build bridges, solve complex problems, and lead with distinction and high character," he said. "This is the opportunity of a lifetime for me and my family. The only thing that would make this day absolutely perfect is if my late parents were here to see the fruits of their sacrifice and also their labor. I know they are watching over us and and am grateful they sacrificed so much for me to be here today."
In keeping with long-standing Norwich tradition, the rank of brigadier general in the Vermont State Militia accompanies the Commandant's role, reflecting the enduring bond between the University, state of Vermont, and citizen-soldier ideal.
A Decorated Career, a Norwich Foundation
BG Denton brings to Northfield 35 years of service as both an enlisted soldier and commissioned officer in the Army. A native of Montego Bay, Jamaica, who came of age in Milton, Massachusetts, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves before reconnecting with Norwich University and earning his commission in 1997 alongside a Bachelor of Science in Communications with a minor in philosophy. Additionally, he was a multi-year starter on the football team, 88.3 WNUB radio DJ, and president of the Harold "Doc" Martin Society.
He has obtained multiple advanced degrees while continuing his military education — a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College and a Master of Arts in Business and Organizational Security Management from Webster University — and holds professional educational experience as a faculty instructor at the U.S. Army War College.
His military career spanned the tactical, operational, and strategic levels of the Army, with six deployments across Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo, Africa, the Sinai Peninsula, and the broader Middle East.
Among the most consequential chapters of that career was his tenure as Deputy Director of Intelligence for Special Operations Joint Task Force-Afghanistan, where he managed $45. billion in contractor and linguist programs while leading intelligence support in one of the Army's most demanding operational environments. He later commanded the 207th Military Intelligence Brigade in Vicenza, Italy, overseeing operations across 54 African nations and the welfare and readiness of more than 1,000 personnel.
A Familiar Mission
As Commandant and Vice President for Student Affairs, BG Denton joins the President's Cabinet and assumes oversight of housing, morale, welfare, and a broad portfolio of student services supporting both Corps and civilian students. His charge is as much developmental as administrative: ensure that every Norwich student graduates prepared to lead and serve wherever life calls them.
"The mission, values, and vision of Norwich University, I believe, will become more critical to the survival of our republic than ever before," said BG Denton. "Service provides the direction and profound purpose that anchors a society."
BG Denton's connection to Norwich spans his entire military career and will now extend beyond it as he returns to Northfield to ensure the next generation of Norwich students receive the same benefits from this institution as he did.
