Timeline of a Cyber Powerhouse

  1. We Begin

Norwich University offered a Bachelor of Science in Computer Security and Information Assurance, combining theory with hands-on experience. The National Security Agency (NSA) designated Norwich as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. Norwich also co-founded the National Cybersecurity Preparedness Consortium (NCPC) and received funding for the National Center for the Study of CounterTerrorism and CyberCrime (NUARI) through a U.S. Department of Justice grant. Additionally, Norwich entered the NSF Cyber Corps and launched an Online Master of Science in Information Assurance, which later became an M.S. in Information Security & Assurance.

  1. Digital Forensics & Leahy Funding

The Norwich Center for Advanced Computing and Digital Forensics (NUCAC-DF) was established with a $15 million contract announced by NUARI and U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy. This included $6 million from the Air Force Research Lab for developing Web*DECIDE, a war gaming platform for the financial sector, and $1.6 million for cybersecurity research at Norwich University. The university also received the CDFAE designation for digital forensic excellence and conducted the Quantum Dawn I cyber threat exercise, the largest of its kind at the time.

U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy announced a $9.9 million Homeland Security contract for NUARI to develop the DECIDE simulation software. NUARI conducted the Quantum Dawn II exercise with 50 financial organizations, a unique cyber threat exercise, and later the Quantum Dawn III simulation, the largest of its kind in the U.S. Norwich University was rated second by the Ponemon Institute for cybersecurity programs and launched an Online Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security. The university also received its first NSA/NSF grant to run an annual GenCyber summer camp for high school students, except in 2020 due to the pandemic.

  1. Super Results

Norwich University’s Bachelor of Science in Computer Security and Information Assurance program supported the Santa Clara Police Department during Super Bowl 50. Additionally, Norwich’s Master of Science in Information Security and Assurance is ranked #3 among cybersecurity graduate programs in the U.S. The Norwich University Applied Research Institutes (NUARI) deployed the DECIDE-FS software simulation in South Africa, involving 16 institutions in a cyber-resiliency exercise. Furthermore, Norwich received a grant from the NSA to train U.S. Army Reserve soldiers in cybersecurity through online certificate programs, making it one of six universities collaborating with the Army Reserve.

  1. Excellence

In 2017 and 2018, Norwich University is recognized by the NSA and the Department of Homeland Security as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education. The DoD Cyber Crime Center also designates it a National Center for Digital Forensic Academic Excellence.

The Norwich University Applied Research Institute (NUARI) received a $2.2 million FEMA grant for first responders and hosted a Reserve Officers’ Association seminar. The U.S. Department of Justice funded the National Center for the Study of Counter Terrorism and Cyber Crime at Norwich.

Norwich launched an Online Master of Science in Information Assurance and received a $3.58 million NSF grant for the Scholarship for Service program. Additionally, it has partnered with Allied Telesis K.K. for cybersecurity services and hosted two NSA and NSF-funded GenCyber summer camps.

  1. New Programming

U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy announced $7.3 million in grants to Norwich to support cybersecurity initiatives. These include the Army Energy Resilience program, scholarships for National Guard and Reserve Forces, and the DECIDE Energy Contract. Norwich also received a $1.6 million grant from the NSA for the Evidencing Competency Oversight Project and a $625,000 contract for developing cold region microgrids. Additionally, Norwich was re-designated by the Defense Cyber Crime Center as a Center of Digital Forensic and Cybersecurity Education and received a $19.5 million grant to lead the Defense Department Cyber Institute program.

  1. AI Launches

Norwich University received an $18.5 million grant for its Defense Department Cyber Institute program and hosted its first Cybersecurity Research in Undergraduate Programs conference with representatives from six Senior Military Colleges. Additionally, Norwich secured $4 million in federal funding to create a center focused on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum computing. Under the National Cybersecurity Preparedness Consortium Act, sponsored by Senator Patrick Leahy, Norwich became one of four institutions partnering with the Department of Homeland Security to train first responders and local officials in cybersecurity and enhance risk prevention and incident response.

  1. Cyber Command Visit

Norwich signs an Educational Partnership Agreement with U.S. Cyber Command following a visit from 4-star General Paul Nakasone, who serves as the Commander of U.S. Cyber Command, National Security Agency's Director, and Central Security Service's Chief.

Additionally, the University hosted the first-ever Information Warfare Exercise, which included participation from all six Service Military Academies and the Army’s 10th Mountain Division.

Norwich received a $5.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation for cybersecurity research, education, training, and scholarships to enhance research opportunities, as well as a $16.4 million grant in Congressional Directed Spending for the establishment of the multi-disciplinary Cyber Fusion Research and Development Center at Norwich.
