The Outdoor School: Future Fueled by History
Norwich University prepares to launch the first sessions of the Outdoor School, drawing inspiration from historic students involved in the Outing Club.
At Norwich University, the rhythm of the academic experience has always extended beyond the traditional classroom. From its founding in 1819 by Captain Alden Partridge, the institution has emphasized a model of education rooted in both intellectual development and physical experience. Today, that philosophy continues to take shape in new and meaningful ways through the University’s new immersive Partridge School of Learning.
The summer of 2026 represents a significant step in that evolution. Through the Partridge School of Outdoor Learning, Norwich is reinforcing a long-standing commitment to experiential education while creating new pathways for students to engage both their studies and the world around them.
A Tradition Rooted in 1819
The summer program is an extension of a philosophy that has defined Norwich since its earliest days.
Alden Partridge founded the University on a belief that education should cultivate both the mind and the body. His vision emphasized practice learning, leadership development, and a connection to the physical environment. That idea, often summarized as the pursuit of “a sound mind in a sound body,” has remained a guiding principle for generations of Norwich students and alumni.
Historical records from the 1920s illustrate how deeply that philosophy took hold. Members of the Norwich Outing Club organized, planned, and constructed a network of trails and shelters in the Green Mountains surrounding Northfield. Their work was not an extracurricular activity in the modern sense, but an extension of their education. They applied skills in surveying, engineering, leadership, and teamwork to create something tangible for both the University and surrounding community.
That effort became more than a student project. It reflected the University’s mission in action, demonstrating how academic knowledge and physical endeavor could combine to serve a broader purpose.
The Partridge School of Outdoor Learning
The Partridge School of Outdoor Learning builds directly on that legacy. Designed as a cornerstone of Norwich’s summer experience, the program brings students into Vermont’s natural landscape to engage in field-based learning that connects academic study with hands-on application. Courses emphasize exploration, problem-solving, and physical engagement, creating an environment where learning is active rather than passive.
This layered approach reflects a broader understanding of how students learn best. It recognized that education is not confined to a single format or locations but can take place wherever curiosity and engagement are present. For those drawn to experiential learning, the Partridge School provides an opportunity to step outside the classroom entirely and immerse themselves in an environment where theory and practice converge.
This approach reflects the same principles that guided the Outing Club over a century ago. Then, as now, the goal is not simply to acquire knowledge, but to use it in meaningful ways.
A Foundation Built on Continuity
The connection between Norwich’s past and present is not incidental. It is intentional.
The same motivations that drove students in the 1920s to build trails and cabins continue to shape the University’s approach to education today. Those students sought to apply what they were learning, to challenge themselves physically, and to contribute to something larger than themselves.
The Partridge School carries that spirit forward. It represents not a departure from tradition, but a return to it. By placing students in environments that demand both intellectual engagement and physical effort, the program reinforces the idea that education is most effective when lived, not just studied.
Preparing for the Future
By maintaining a commitment to the University’s foundational principles while adapting to the needs of contemporary students, Norwich is creating opportunities that are both relevant and enduring. The integration of flexible coursework with experiential learning ensures that students can pursue their goals in ways that align with their individual paths.
At the same time, the emphasis on outdoor education and applied learning prepares students for the complexities of the modern world. Whether they pursue careers in the military, public service, or the private sector, they carry with them the ability to think critically, act decisively, and lead effectively.
With the launching of the Partridge School of Outdoor Learning, Norwich is taking deliberate steps to continually bring its founding philosophy into the present.
A Flexible Academic Model
The summer session is designed to meet the needs of the changing student experience. Open to current, incoming, and transfer students, as well as those enrolled at other institutions and adult life-long learners, the program reflects a broad and inclusive approach to higher education. Education, at its best, is active, purposeful, and deeply connected to the world in which it takes place.
The 2026 summer term is structured to provide multiple entry points and formats. The full term runs from May 4-Aug. 7, with sessions that allow students to tailor their academic schedules.
- Session A: May 4-June 27
- Session B: June 29-Aug. 22
