Renewable Energy: Engineering in Copenhagen
Norwich engineering students traded classroom theory for hands-on exploration of Denmark’s clean energy systems, from offshore wind farms to waste-to-energy plants.
Dr. Karen Supan, professor of mechanical engineering, led a group of Norwich University students to Copenhagen, Denmark, in May as part of her Going Green with Energy course. It marked the fourth time in the past decade that Supan has taken students on the trip.
The itinerary immersed students in Denmark’s renewable energy infrastructure firsthand. Stops included the Middelgrunden offshore wind turbine farm, the Amager Resource Center waste-to-energy plant, and the Danish Architecture Center, along with a boat tour to view wind turbines up close. Students also took part in a Green Energy Bike Tour through Malmö, Sweden, pedaling the city’s streets to see sustainable design and infrastructure in practice.
Students who made the trip included Andrew Clark '27, Kylie Farris '27, Cullen Pierce '28, Rae Lawing '28, Vlad Valevski '28, Brook Wolcott '29, Julian Gold, and Mallory Supan.
The course gives engineering students a chance to study renewable energy systems abroad, pairing classroom learning with direct exposure to some of Europe’s leading models for clean power generation and sustainable urban design.
