Built for Leadership

The newly remodeled Commandant's Conference Room in Jackman Hall connects Norwich University's present-day Corps of Cadets with generations of military leadership and institutional history.

Redesigned as both a functional meeting space and a tribute to Norwich heritage, the room features portraits of every commandant to serve at the university, alongside other prominent figures who shaped Norwich's legacy across more than two centuries. Displays and curated details throughout the space highlight leaders whose service, leadership, and influence continue to define the Norwich spirit, such as GEN Gordon Sullivan '59, USA.

Each figure represents a different chapter of Norwich's story, from its inception to the stalwarts of modern military command and international statesmanship. Together, their presence in the room ties the University's founding mission — to prepare citizen-soldiers for lives of leadership and service — to the achievements of the alumni who carried that mission forward.

The room also includes portraits of every Commandant to have served at Norwich, forming an unbroken visual record of the leadership that has guided the Corps of Cadets throughout the university's history.

The room is regularly used by the Commandant and staff, with students making use of the space as well. Wall decorations and commemorative images throughout the room offer a daily reminder, for cadets and staff alike, of the tradition they are now part of.

The renovation reflects Norwich's continued commitment to honoring its past while giving today's cadets a tangible connection to the leaders who came before them — and to the standard they're being trained to carry into the future.
