The Charles A. Dana Category I Lecture Series presents "From Precision Medicine to Precision Health Nursing: Advancing Rural Cancer Research and Translating Genomic Science Into Nursing Education" with Martha Curtin, assistant professor of nursing, Norwich University.
About the Lecture
Personal research conducted over the past five years has examined precision medicine and health disparities among individuals with cancer and the lived experiences of rural patients navigating cancer diagnosis and treatment, collectively contributing to a broader precision health framework for nursing practice. Building on this body of evidence, subsequent scholarship has focused on translating precision health concepts, including genetics, genomics, prevention, and individualized care, into undergraduate nursing education to prepare nurses for emerging models of precision health care. This progression of research is reflected in a new focus that synthesizes findings from oncology, rural health, and nursing education to illustrate educational strategies that support equitable, evidence-based precision health across diverse populations.
Event Details
Lecture to be held in the Cyber Fusion Center, Room 112.
About Dr. Curtin
Dr. Martha S. Curtin, Ph.D., M.S., RN, is an assistant professor in the School of Nursing at Norwich University whose scholarship explores topics related to precision health, rural oncology, genetics and genomics, and nursing education. A registered nurse and former certified genetic counselor, she brings clinical expertise in medical-surgical nursing, college health, prenatal and pediatric genetics, and cancer genetics to both her teaching and research. Her research has focused on improving equitable access to precision healthcare, understanding the lived experiences of rural individuals with cancer, and translating emerging genomic science into nursing practice. Curtin has published in leading nursing journals, including Cancer Nursing, Advances in Nursing Science, and Oncology Nursing Forum, and has presented her work regionally through the Eastern Nursing Research Society and Vermont Biomedical Research Network. She currently teaches and advises in the undergraduate nursing program while advancing research that prepares nurses to deliver evidence-based, person-centered care in an era of precision healthcare.
