Physical education majors can declare a concentration in health. This concentration or minor is designed to add depth and breadth to a student's education in health and wellness, develop healthy lifelong patterns, and increase the marketability of graduates. See Course Catalog for details.
Majors integrate physical education theory with hands-on practice utilizing a wide range of effective teaching styles that enable them to lead and manage large groups in a variety of activity and athletic settings. Before student teaching, majors in the program must complete up to 100 hours of fieldwork in the PE classroom, local school field trips, and two Vermont Special Olympics athletic tournaments.
Program highlights include attending and presenting at PE conventions, canoeing field trips, and managing extremely rewarding Special Olympics events
Norwich University has earned 7 out of the last 10 Outstanding Future Professional awards in the field of Physical Education from the Society of Health and Physical Educators of Vermont organization.
The Norwich University Physical Education program and students have also been recognized by the NCAA for our work with the Vermont Special Olympics. Recent program graduates have gone on to earn both full and partial scholarships from Norwich University’s School of Graduate and Continuing Studies. Others have received graduate internships and/or scholarships from the University of Pittsburgh, Rutgers, and McGill University, among other institutions.
Physical education majors can declare a concentration in coaching. The concentration or minor is designed to meet proposed national standards preparation in coaching for elementary through high school level. The primary goals are to teach coaching fundamentals, injury prevention, health awareness, motor skill development, adolescent behavior, and youth leadership skills. See Course Catalog for details.
