All engineering students in our program are encouraged to form relationships with colleagues and professors in other departments and universities, with the goal of a better understanding of what drives real-world projects.
Whether it means joining a scientific team living in Antarctica, participating in a multi-university effort to improve the effectiveness of NASA “CubeSat” miniature satellites, finding ways to increase a solar panel’s efficiency, or reviving an old water-powered electrical plant, engineering students apply the knowledge they gain in classrooms to challenges from the outside world.
Students also participate in design contests. These exciting projects are carefully mentored by engineering faculty and industry experts, and bring students firsthand experience in testing, design and construction. We would love for you to pay us a visit.
The mechanical engineering program prepares graduates to apply engineering principles and modern tools to conceive, analyze and implement engineering solutions and to hold positions of progressive responsibility leading teams in a variety of mechanical engineering fields including energy conversion and transfer, materials and manufacturing, and mechanical systems design.
Upon completing their degree, majors are ready to work as professionals in industrial, military, government, and academic settings while maintaining a high awareness and responsibility regarding ethical, safety, environmental, social, economic, and global issues. The mechanical engineering program at Norwich prepares majors to both work effectively as a team member and to lead multidisciplinary teams. The program empowers majors to not only design components, systems or processes in the mechanical engineering field but to effectively communicate those designs orally and in writing.
The program strives to spark optimism about the engineering profession and lifelong intellectual curiosity, so that graduates engage in continuing education throughout their lives and careers.
Mechanical engineers play a pivotal role in nearly everything that makes life work. From seemingly simple devices like doorknobs and zip-lock freezer bags to complex robots and spacecrafts, there is hardly an area of everyday life that hasn’t been influenced by a mechanical engineer somewhere along the path from invention to installation.
