The environmental science program at Norwich provides an interdisciplinary education designed for those with environmental interests and career goals. The program emphasizes experiential learning, commonly through field studies and outdoor education.
Courses include real projects and original research participation. Students begin their curriculum with the development of a firm base in the sciences and mathematics.
Each student develops an area of specialization by selecting a concentration from one of two options. The Scientific Foundation concentration allows students to further focus their studies in related fields such as, ecology, hydrology, and environmental engineering. The Social/Cultural Foundations concentration provides the opportunity for students to pursue courses related to environmental policy, law enforcement, and management. Both concentrations give students the flexibility to pursue a minor in a related field, such as biology or criminal justice.
Another highlight of the program is that all students get the opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor to complete a senior field-based research project. The Northfield campus offers excellent access to streams, lakes, and mountains in central Vermont. The department also houses a number of high-precision instruments for environmental monitoring and analysis.
