Real-world classroom experience and excellent instruction combine to give aspiring teachers the skills to meet Vermont state licensure requirements and become highly effective educators.
With our elementary and secondary licensure tracks, an Education major provides choice and flexibility. You will be engaged in a variety of classroom experiences that begin in the fall of your sophomore year. An emphasis on inquiry-based learning with reflection and modeling places you with teachers who demonstrate best-teaching practices. Majors work closely with Education Department faculty who ensure placement with willing and engaging mentors.
Elementary education majors are required to earn a degree in another discipline. Psychology, mathematics, history, English, and science offer several examples. Secondary education majors are required to major in mathematics. Students may also choose to augment any degree with an education minor. However, this will not qualify them for teacher licensure in Vermont.
In addition, the Education program offers opportunities for international service learning and participation in the Teacher Education Club. This group provides opportunities for greater learning with lunch seminars, discussions of education, and the creation of a teaching community.
