NORWICH UPDATES

Keeping our Norwich students and community informed and safe.

spring 2021 covid testing

PLEASE NOTE: In the abundance of caution and for the health and safety of the Norwich and central Vermont community, the Norwich campus is closed to the public for the foreseeable future to include all buildings, fields and tracks. Thank you for your understanding.

Effective immediately, Norwich residential students will be required to remain in modified room quarantine until student households have been defined and approved.

Student Household

COVID-19 outbreaks in Vermont have risen significantly in the past six months and have largely resulted from spread occurring at private parties and/or social gatherings, including recreational, indoor and outdoor entertainment, incidental to ceremonies, holiday gatherings, parties and celebrations. To reduce the spread of COVID-19, the State of Vermont urges all Vermonters to avoid multi-household gatherings.

Therefore, to reduce COVID-19 spread on our campus, and in compliance with the State of Vermont Higher Education Mandatory guidance for college opening, Norwich has defined a “household” for the purposes of protecting the Norwich community and prohibiting multi-household gatherings.

The definition of a “Student Household” at Norwich is defined as follows:

Each student shall identify up to six individuals that constitute their household, and each student is limited to membership in one household only. The household shall include each student’s roommate. Students are required to restrict social gatherings to this micro-group. Social gatherings do not include dining operations, library operations, in-person classes, religious gatherings, college affiliated athletics, and institutional programing that is conducted in a way that restricts interactions between households.

All “Student Households” need to be formed and communicated to the appropriate lifestyle leadership before we transition from modified room quarantine to campus quarantine.   All households must be posted by tomorrow, January 22nd no later than 12:00 noon for review and approval.  After all the households have been formed and communicated to leadership for approval, we can transition from modified room quarantine to campus quarantine. Students will receive an announcement when the transition occurs to campus quarantine.

Students must also post their approved student household list on the outside of the door of their residence hall or barrack room. This list must include the name, residence hall or barrack, and room number for each student in the “Student Household.”

For questions about your “Student Household,” please contact your company mentor or Residence Life Staff at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Campus Quarantine

During the campus quarantine, it is vital that students continue to fully comply with the Student Behavioral Contract, the Daily Health Screening, adhere to the face mask/coverings policy, maintain physical distancing, and follow hand hygiene guidelines. In the barracks or residence halls, facial coverings are required at all times except when students are in their own room alone, or with their own roommate only and the room door is closed. Facial coverings should also be worn at all times while on campus, in classrooms and labs as well as in all public areas, indoors or outdoors, especially in congregate settings, and where it is not possible to maintain a physical distance of at least six feet.

Students will only be allowed to enter the residential building in which they reside and are not permitted to enter any other residential buildings. Students will be able to participate in outdoor activities as well as indoor physical activities and student events with some restrictions to keep residential groups separate.

All residential students will receive a second COVID-19 test on day-7. The campus quarantine will continue until all tests are back and it is determined that we can safely lift additional restrictions. We anticipate that date to be January 28th and will provide an update.

Dining Operations

During Campus Quarantine, students will continue to dine by residential halls and barracks. Sodexo offers students two meals daily and a bagged breakfast during campus quarantine. Students are encouraged to augment their bagged breakfast with bagels, oatmeal, fresh fruit, snacks, etc. as desired. Students who have synchronous class conflicts at lunch or dinner are able to pick up a bagged meal from 10:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at The Mill. As a reminder, students picking up a bagged meal should enter through the Pub entrance and exit through the front door.  This reduces contact between students from different residential buildings.

Following the campus quarantine, dining operations will change. Students will receive a detailed update regarding the operational schedule for all dining facilities on Friday, January 22nd. Additionally, Pick 5 will be reopen along with other retail food locations.  We will also be reintroducing snack time to the dining hall.

Meal Assignments

The color-coded bracelet system will end when campus quarantine concludes and scheduling your mealtimes will be required.  On Monday, January 25th, students will receive an email that outlines how to schedule your mealtimes in Banner.  Students will not have meal identifying stickers on their cards this semester.  Periodically, dining employees may ask students to show their scheduled mealtimes in Banner on their phone.  This will occur if we see density reaching maximum capacities per State of Vermont COVID-19 guidelines.  Rooks, Cadre, and Calvary will be assigned mealtimes for Monday- Friday dinner and weekend meals.  These students will still need to self-select the times of their other meal periods.

Mailroom

All packages currently in the Mailroom will be delivered to the residence halls and barracks on Friday morning, January 22nd. Lifestyle leadership will distribute these packages to student’s rooms.

During the week of January 25th – 29th, students will be able to visit the Mailroom to retrieve mail from their assigned mailboxes, and pick up packages from the Mailroom service window, on the following residential building schedule:
