Students at Norwich University will be giving away free money on September 15th, 2023, to celebrate Free Money Day, challenging gifters and recipients to think about our relationship with money and the possibility of a more generous world.
NORTHFIELD, Vt. —Each year on September 15th, people head out into their communities to celebrate Free Money Day by giving away two notes or coins at a time, asking recipients to pass one on. Norwich University students will participate in Free Money Day for the second year on Friday, September 15th. Catch them around 2:15-3:45 pm around the Northfield Town Common while they still have dollars left!
Handing out free money provides an opportunity for students to consider their own relationship with money and uncovers “hidden” forms of economic activity, such as sharing and gifting, showing that a more generous world is possible.
Free Money Day also allows students to engage with their peers and community members, expand their comfort with gifting and receiving, and ultimately spark conversations about the role of money in society, ways they already participate in the sharing economy, and even broader considerations like what type of economic changes they’d like to see in their community.
“We participate in economic activities every day, but rarely do we consider our acts of sharing and gifting ‘economic’” says economics professor, Jacki Strenio. “I want to give my students a chance to become more comfortable discussing economic ideas with their peers, while also allowing them to experience the feeling of giving money away.”
Come find Norwich University economics students on the town common around 2:15-3:45 pm on September 15th, 2023, as they celebrate Free Money Day and gift you some dollars of your own—one to keep and one to pass on.
