Convocation, Corps of Cadets Olympics usher in opening week of 2021-22 academic year

Norwich University is back in class (the semester started Monday), which means the return of Convocation and a passel of getting-to-know-you events.

After a year running virtually because of COVID-19, the traditional learning-community convening and welcome-to-the-year ceremony is back and in person, set for 1:30 p.m. in Shapiro Field House. President Dr. Mark Anarumo will deliver keynote remarks.

Interim Provost and Faculty Dean Dr. Stephen Fitzhugh, a former engineering professor and head of Norwich University’s engineering department and Dr. Megan Doczi, an associate professor of biology and leader of Norwich’s neuroscience program, will also speak.

The Regimental Band, by tradition, will play the national anthem and recessional music; the Rev. William Wick will give the invocation. View the livestream.

Club adviser’s workshops, directed by the Campus Activities Board, will run in Mack Hall at noon and 7 p.m. Wednesday. Clubs at Norwich have included ballroom dancing, the Pegasus Players theater troupe, Arnold Air Society, Semper Fidelis Society, the Norwich Guidon student newspaper and many more.

Norwich University’s International Center, which held a Global Social last week, will have a welcome back picnic from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Plumley Armory’s gymnasium. This event will introduce new international students to returning international students and study abroad returnees.

Before the picnic, students who studied abroad and away will debrief, sharing their stories from abroad and discussing reverse culture shock, international transfer credit and how to capitalize on experiences abroad. These students form an important Norwich cohort; Anarumo has said increasing campus internationalization and boosting study abroad are goals.

Over the Labor Day weekend, the Corps of Cadets will debut its Class of 2024 Olympics from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on the Upper Parade Ground and will convene for a Class of 2024 dinner. The meal will run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Wise Campus Center’s dining hall.
