Security Environment in the Black Sea Region

Norwich University is hosting Fulbright scholar Lieutenant Colonel Georgi Marinchev Marinov, Ph.D., of Sofia, Bulgaria. As part of his role, Dr. Marinchev gave the following presentation.

The Black Sea region is of crucial significance for Europe and the United States, as it is a major crossroad and critical intersection of east-west and south-north corridors. Many experts believe that whoever controls or dominates the Black Sea can easily project power to the European continent, primarily in the Balkans and Central Europe, but also in the Eastern Mediterranean as well as the South Caucasus and the northern Middle East. The modern security environment in the Black Sea region is characterized by dynamic, contradictory, and hardly predictable changes that affect national, regional, and alliance levels. Every change in the region exerts influence on the other end of the world.
