Norwich University has earned two grants totaling over $170,549 from the National Security Agency (NSA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) to host two summer camps. Now in its fourth year, GenCyber@NU will be joined by a new advanced camp, GenCyberForensics@NU. The camps will teach high school juniors and seniors about CyberSecurity.

These comprehensive programs are free to all participants and will be taught by standout Norwich faculty and students including Director of the Center for Advanced Computing and Digital Forensics Professor Huw Read and Associate Director for Computer Science and Computer Science and Information Assurance programs Matthew Bovee.

Applications are invited from high school students who will be entering their junior or senior year in the fall of 2018. Deadline to apply to both camps is May 9, 2018. All expenses for the week-long programs, including tuition, room and board, and applicable local commuting to and from the Norwich University campus, field trips, and other program fees are at no cost to GenCyber participants.

The Cyber Security and Cyber Defense Camp runs July 22-28, 2018, and features:

  • Introduction to Cyber: Learn about information security and cyber forensics through lectures, labs and from guest speakers.
  • Hands-On Exercises: Cyber camp counselors and faculty will reveal the inner workings of computers, networks, security and forensics in a “War Room.”
  • Outdoor Exercises: Including a cyber treasure hunt where the rogue WiFi hotspots mark the spot.
  • Guest Speakers: Experts will present “hot topics” in cyber and facilitate a Q&A with campers about life as a cyber specialist.
  • Off-campus excursions: A tasty trip to the home of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream will show how cyber is everywhere, even in the heart of an ice cream factory, and learn what happens during a real cyber-security attack on a national infrastructure with various hands-on team exercises.
  • Competitive Exercises: Surprise cyber forensic challenges with prizes awarded to the winners.

The Advanced Cyber Forensics Camp runs July 29-August 4, 2018, and features:

  • Introduction to Cyber Forensics: Learn about the different jobs you can do within forensics, and get a sense of each.
  • Deep-dive: Enjoy detailed training with hands-on exercises in several tools used for analyzing computers and mobile devices – with the opportunity to take a certification exam!
  • Outdoor Exercises: Including Norwich’s first digital detective whodunit! Did we mention you get to keep the mobile phone?
  • Guest Speakers: Experts will present “hot topics” in forensics and facilitate a Q&A about life as a forensic specialist.
  • Off-campus excursions: A look at how industry is helping to combat challenges to new technology such as the Internet of Things.
  • Competitive Exercises: Surprise cyber forensic challenges with prizes awarded to the winners.

Additionally, GenCyber@NU participants will be provided with the hardware and software to build a mini computer, which campers keep at the end of the program. GenCyberForensics@NU participants will be provided with hardware and software to perform mobile security assessments, which campers keep at the end of the program.
