Ahmed Abdeen Hamed, Ph.D., joined the faculty in 2019 as Norwich University’s first specialist in data analytics. He is leading the charge to develop both data analytics courses and the new data analytics concentrations for several majors across campus.

A data scientist with over 15 years of experience, he is enthusiastic about helping students from across the university understand the tools and potentials of big data analysis for optimization in business, engineering, health, and the social sciences.

He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Vermont in 2014. His dissertation presented novel network models and algorithms exploring social media data. Particularly, his work investigated digital recruitment, adverse drug events, mining climate change awareness, and peoples’ ranking on social media. While he was working in the private sector, he designed network algorithms that produce drug ranking analytics based on target specificity. This work was awarded a patent on which Hamed is the first inventor.

Outside of Norwich, he spends time with his daughter and plays music with her. He enjoys hiking and biking at the Colchester Causeway, reading at Barnes & Noble, cooking, meditating, and thinking.
