Mary Hoppe earned her BA in chemistry at the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minnesota. She did her graduate work in inorganic/organometallic chemistry at the University of Michigan. She then returned to Minnesota to accept a faculty position at the University of Minnesota—Morris campus.

Prof. Hoppe joined the faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Norwich in 1981, teaching general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and analytical chemistry. Her current research interests focus on chemical education and active learning. With other members of her department, she pioneered the use of Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) at Norwich.
