Welcome to the College of Science and Mathematics (CoSM). Here you will find the fusion of 12 programs that rigorously prepare students for graduate school, military service, industry, government, education and admission into professional schools (such as medicine and dentistry).
The College’s mission is providing high-quality academic degree programs in mathematics and the physical, biological and life sciences for our majors. We also meet the interdisciplinary needs of the University by providing support courses in science and mathematics. To this end, CoSM, through lectures and laboratories, provides the knowledge, experience and guidance in mathematics and sciences that prepare our students to pursue advanced study and successful careers and become responsible citizens.
The education of future scientists and practitioners and the growth of a scientifically literate populace are of critical importance. CoSM takes great pride in promoting excellence in teaching, advising and mentoring students in a community of scholars. The emphasis on experiential learning, conceived by Norwich founder Capt. Alden Partridge, of thinking and acting, conceiving and executing, is rooted in every student, faculty and staff member.
Faculty engagement with colleagues and undergraduates allows students to experience the highest levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy: analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Faculty and students can be found exploring the impacts of amyloid-beta peptides on the progression of Alzheimer’s, modeling the interiors of supernovae, studying late-glacial climate change in central Vermont … and much more.
The College embraces the University’s mission of “Global in Perspective.” Study abroad and cultural immersions are available around the globe, including Norwich’s own CityLab in Berlin, Germany, memorandums of understanding with University College Cork and University College Dublin in Ireland or anywhere science, health or education fields can take you. The possibilities are endless.
Take the opportunity to explore our programs and consider a science and mathematics major as an area of study. I encourage you to visit the campus and see the opportunities that are available. Our faculty and staff are friendly, accessible and willing to answer questions.
