Outdoor Play
500 Steps Away!

Located at the base of Paine Mountain, just 500 steps from the Wise Campus Center, the Shaw Outdoor Center offers free use of outdoor recreational equipment and access to the Paine Mountain trail system for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, trail running, and more. There are also opportunities for paintball, disc golf, ice climbing, sledding, and camping in the wilderness.

We’re eager to help facilitate and improve your outdoor recreation experience. Check out our hours and calendar of skills courses and activities.

HOURS & LOCATION
Weekdays Noon – 6 p.m.
Weekends 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.

On the Paine Mountain hillside, off Crescent Avenue.

ACTIVITIES & PROGRAMS
SPRING 2019

  • PM Snowshoe trek: Friday, March 22, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
    • No registration needed, unlimited participants
    • Snowshoes & headlamps provided
    • Two distances, each led by a guide
    • Meet in the Shaw Outdoor Center lobby
    • Destination is a picturesque spot on Paine Mountain with a warming fire & hot chocolate
    • FREE
  • CPR & First Aid Certification Course: Saturday, March 30, 8-11 a.m.
    • Registration required.*
    • Limited to 12 people
    • Takes place in the Shaw Outdoor Center lobby
    • Must be at least 15 years old to attend or be accompanied by another attendee who is 18 or older
    • $25.00 for Norwich students or employees
    • $35.00 for the general public
  • Disc Golf Intro: Saturday, April 6, 1-3 p.m.
    • Registration required*
    • Limited to 14 people
    • Takes place in the Shapiro Field House
    • You will learn the essential rules, disc selection, and throwing techniques
    • FREE
  • Fix-A-Flat: Sunday, April 7, 10-11 a.m.
    • Registration required*
    • Limited to 12 people
    • Takes place in the Shaw Outdoor Center lobby
    • You will learn how to repair a flat tire on a bicycle
    • FREE to Norwich students or employees
    • $5.00 for the general public
  • Disc Golf Challenge: Saturday, April 13, 1-3 p.m.
    • Registration required*
    • Limited to 14 people
    • Takes place in the Shapiro Field House
    • We’ll have a small indoor course to experience the real game
    • FREE
  • CPR & First Aid Certification Course: Wednesday, April 10, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
    • Must be at least 15 or be accompanied by another attendee who is 18 or older
    • Registration required*
    • Limited to 12 people
    • Takes place in the Shaw Outdoor Center lobby
    • $25.00 for Norwich students or employees
    • $35.00 for the general public
  • Fire Technique & Ethic: Wednesday, April 17, 5-6:30 p.m.
    • Registration required*
    • Limited to 8 people
    • Meet in the Shaw Outdoor Center lobby
    • You will learn how to make a camp fire, and the technique to leave no trace of it
    • FREE
  • CPR & 1st Aid Certification Course: Saturday, April 20, 8-11 a.m.
    • Must be at least 15 or be accompanied by another attendee who is 18 or older
    • Registration required*
    • Limited to 12 people
    • Takes place in the Shaw Outdoor Center lobby
    • $25.00 for Norwich students or employees
    • $35.00 for the general public
  • MTB Level I: Wednesday, April 24, 4:30-6:30 p.m.
    • Registration required*
    • Limited to 10 people
    • Meet in the Shaw Outdoor Center lobby
    • You will learn proper bike fit, pre-ride equipment check, body positioning, shifting, braking, climbing, and general riding technique
    • FREE
  • Disc Golf Trip: Saturday, April 27, 1-4:30 p.m.
    • Must attend at least one of the previous Disc Golf Activities to be invited
    • Limited to 14 people
    • Meet in the Shaw Outdoor Center lobby
    • We will travel about 30 minutes to an 18-hole Disc Golf course
    • You will be provided discs, and guidance to then play an 18-hole round
    • FREE
  • Mountain Biking Level I: Saturday, April 28, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
    • Registration required*
    • Limited to 10 people
    • Meet in the Shaw Outdoor Center lobby
    • You will learn proper bike fit, pre-ride equipment check, body positioning, shifting, braking, climbing, and general riding technique
    • FREE
  • Fix-A-Flat: Wednesday, May 1, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
    • Registration required*
    • Limited to 12 people
    • Takes place in the Shaw Outdoor Center lobby
    • You will learn how to repair a flat tire on a bicycle

  • Mountain Biking Essentials: Saturday, May 4, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (revolving 15-minute classes)
    • No registration required
    • Unlimited participants
    • Takes place at the Shaw Outdoor Center
    • You will learn: proper bike fit, pre-ride equipment check, body position, shifting, braking
    • Just a 15- to 20-minute class, then you’ll be able to go for a ride on our amazing trail network.
