SPANISH

YOUR
COMPETITIVE
EDGE.

Majoring or minoring in Spanish gives you a competitive edge in today’s global economy.

Spanish is the second-most-spoken language in the world, both domestically and abroad. Language proficiency guarantees you cultural competency within the U.S. and global communities. As a major, you’ll experience personal transformation through study-abroad opportunities and intellectual growth via our innovative curriculum. Course offerings encompass Latinos and immigration, drug cartels, cinema, and literature, taught in personalized classes augmented by extracurricular activities.

  • Why Study Spanish?

What is it about Spanish that makes it worth studying?

    Cultural Awareness
Spanish brings you face-to-face with the compelling socio-political issues of our time, from immigration to the drug war. It opens a door onto one of the great literary work of all time, Cervantes’s Don Quixote, as well those of 11 Nobel Prize-winning authors. You’ll gain cultural exposure to countries that collectively have won 10 World Cup soccer titles; not to mention the art of Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Diego Rivera; the home of Mexican salsa, Spanish guitar, and Argentine tango; and the archeological wonders of Machu Picchu and the Aztec pyramids. The Spanish language connects you with the U.S. Latino community, great food and music.

    Employment Opportunities
Spanish speakers earned on average $300 more monthly for being bilingual. They are in high demand in government, diplomacy, police forces, military service, business, nursing, environmental science, education, advertising, and mass media. Spanish is the second most widely spoken language by native speakers. It the second language in the U.S. It is the official language of 21 countries.

Stronger Verbal and Critical Thinking Skills
Learning to read, listen, speak, and write in Spanish is the best way to strengthen critical thinking skills in your native language necessary for graduate level entrance exams and successful performance in all advanced studies at the graduate level.

  • Program Details

The Spanish language student pursuing the major or the minor has access to a wide range of courses designed to build a solid foundation in the language, perfect speaking and compositional skills, teach literature in tandem with the culture of both Spain and Hispanoamerica, focus on special topics in Latino studies, cinema, women authors, or literary genres, and culminate in a senior capstone course, typically dealing with an eminent writer, such as Cervantes or García Márquez. The senior portfolio incorporates assessment of writing and speaking proficiency with samples of student work toward the major. All students are encouraged to participate in the program´s on-campus cultural activities and to study abroad for a summer or semester in an approved overseas program to experience language immersion and explore in situ a Hispanic culture. The foreign language placement test is required before any student registers for a first course in the program.
