Dean, College of Science & Mathematics

Description:

Norwich University, nestled in the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont, invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics to start in Fall 2013. The College has ten degree programs within its departments of Biology & Physical Education, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Geology & Environmental Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Sports Medicine. The College faculty seek to maintain their reputation as excellent educators and to continue strengthening their recognition as contributing scholars.

Responsibilities:

The Dean is the chief administrative and academic officer of the College and will provide the direction and leadership necessary to promote its continued advancement. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: short-range and long-range academic planning; budget management and fiscal oversight; hiring and mentoring faculty; supervising and evaluating department chairs; fostering faculty development; assessing learning outcomes; curriculum mapping for internationalization; facilitating interdisciplinary teaching and research; maintaining academic standards; supervising harmonious governance in the College; and participating in fundraising. The Dean will serve as a key advocate for undergraduate research and champion the role of science and mathematics in the general education of all Norwich students. The Dean reports to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty, sits on the Deans Council, and will be actively engaged in formulating and executing the strategic initiatives of the University, as well as those of the College of Science and Mathematics.

Qualifications:

A successful candidate should have qualifications that include an earned doctorate or a terminal degree in a field aligned with the College; a minimum of five years of progressively increasing administrative experience at the department chair level or above; a clear leadership vision for the College; a record of effective teaching, including experience in mentoring undergraduate research, and of scholarly accomplishments that support appointment as a tenured associate or full professor; a solid understanding of current trends and practices in higher education including traditional and online education; a familiarity with sponsored research including a record of successful grant procurement; a clear understanding of and experience in assessment and accreditation processes; experience in attracting philanthropic gifts, developing new partnerships, and nurturing external relationships with the community, private donors, and alumni.
