Norwich University, the nation’s first private military college and the birthplace of ROTC, seeks a dynamic leader and student life professional to fill the position of Assistant Commandant. This position is a uniformed position with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Vermont State Militia.
The Assistant Commandant mentors cadet leadership; oversees and administers disciplinary sanctions less than suspension; supervises training, administration, supply maintenance, safety, security, morale and welfare of a battalion (300 members) of the Corps of Cadets. The Assistant Commandant develops and documents student leadership competencies and instruction. Assists in the coordination and scheduling of ceremonies, training, events, and activities involving the student body. Prepares lesson plans, training support materials, training aids, criterion reference examinations, warning orders, operation orders, memoranda and letters of instruction. Schedules instructors, classrooms, outdoor training locations, multimedia support, medical support, food service support, transportation and other resources required for Battalion training. Provides ethics and leadership instruction, evaluates performance, and maintains student training records. Enforces University policies, rules, and regulations. Responds to parental inquiries, approves leaves/absences, and conducts investigations. Serves as evening and weekend duty officer on a rotational basis.
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years related experience, including service as a commissioned officer with training development and command experience. Knowledge of military training and discipline, and strong leadership, communication and problem solving skills are essential. Specialized knowledge of conflict resolution, leadership development, student activities, policy development, and skills in mentoring and student advising are necessary. A Master’s Degree and higher education experience is preferred.
