On July 7, 2005 there were a series of coordinated suicide attacks in London using the public transport system during the morning rush hour. Four UK nationals detonated four bombs, three on London Underground trains in quick succession, a fourth bomb exploding an hour later on a double-decker bus in Tavistock Square. Fifty-six people, including the four bombers, were killed by the attacks and about 700 sustained significant injuries. The explosions were caused by homemade, organic peroxide based devices packed into rucksacks. The investigation that followed is the largest conducted in England and Wales.
