Phase II (Basic Leadership Training)

This training phase straddles the conclusion of the fall semester and about the first eight weeks of the spring semester. Recruits practice supervising their peers performing routine tasks (e.g., maintaining their room in accordance with NUCC standards). Frequent counseling provides the feedback mechanism to encourage and monitor growth as a young leader. Rooks begin the process of establishing goals and objectives for training and learn the tactics, techniques and procedures to improve their leadership skills.

Basic Leadership Training will include the following goals and topics:

  • Validate academic excellence as evidenced by GPA 2.0 or higher (goal is 3.0)
  • Principles of leadership
  • Roles and responsibilities of team leader, squad leader, and the junior noncommissioned officer
  • Norwich Training Philosophy
  • Demonstrate proficiency march a team, squad, and platoons
  • Counseling and performance evaluations
  • Participate in Community Service Project
  • Participate Green Mountain Experience
  • Conduct in-ranks inspections and room inspection
  • Sustain or improve wellness (improve PFT 10 points)

Upon successful completion of Basic Leader Training, recruits earn the title of “cadet” and are promoted to private with the rights and privileges of a 4th class cadet. Those cadets who successfully complete all required training, including a 50% or better in each event of the NUPFT and participate in all major training events, will receive the Freshman Training Ribbon.
