General
What is the difference between officers and enlisted personnel?
Enlisted personnel enter the Army through basic training. A college degree is not required and their skill set is very specific. An officer must have a college degree and has a much broader set of skills. Officers are held accountable and are responsible for the training of enlisted personnel with the help of their Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs).
What are the special schools that I can to through Army ROTC?
Airborne, Air Assault, Mountain Warfare School, Camp Buckner (West Point), Olmsted Scholarship.
How will Army ROTC at Norwich University prepare me for an Army career?
Between the Corps of Cadets and the Army ROTC program a student will gain invaluable leadership experience that few students across the nation have an opportunity to gain. Army summer skill schools will also allow students to gain valuable skills and obtain valuable training.

What is physical training like for Army ROTC?
PT is three days a week and consists of push-ups, sit-ups, running, and other exercises with the occasional team sport added in the mix.
Can I study abroad while a member of Army ROTC?
Yes, but it is usually authorized first semester of your senior year only.
Can I commission through Army ROTC if I have dual-citizenship or if I am a non-US citizen?
- Dual-citizens must renounce their non-US citizenship.
- Non-US citizens must become US citizens to contract and commission.
Do I have to contract immediately to be a part of Army ROTC?
No, but no benefits in terms of scholarship or monies will be awarded. Students have until the last day of school of their senior year to contract.
What is the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP)?
The SMP program allows a cadet to be contracted through the ROTC program, and, at the same time, be a part of the National Guard. With the Guard, the cadet will have the rank of Cadet (E-5 pay grade), and will shadow a platoon leader or other officer of the unit. SMP cadets cannot be deployed. Cadets interested in the SMP program can apply their sophomore year.
Can I commission in the JAG Corps through Army ROTC?
No, but you can apply for an educational delay to attend law school upon commissioning and transfer into the JAG Corps from there.
Can I be deployed while participating in Army ROTC?
No, not as a contracted ROTC cadet.
What kind of training is conducted through the Army ROTC?
Army ROTC trains in officer and leadership development. Tactically, cadets will learn how to conduct and lead battle drills, how to move with their units, basic marksmanship skills, land navigation skills, and hands-on opportunities to develop and refine their leadership skills.
What facilities and materials are available for training at Army ROTC?
Cadets will learn the basics of unit movement and battle drills in an open environment, such as sports fields, where every step can be broken down and practiced. Once the basics are down Cadets can move to Norwich’s other training sites which include Paine Mountain and Dole Hill. These two wooded sites are used to further hone skills learned in class and during leadership laboratory and are each set up with their own land navigation courses. Other on-campus training aides include the obstacle course, a rappel tower, and a host of simulators housed in the National Guard Armory. Army ROTC also trains at Devens, Mass. and Ethan Allen Firing Range in Jericho, Vt., the same training area used by the Army to train mountaineering skills. There are a full array of ranges and outstanding training areas.
How much shooting will I do while participating in Army ROTC?
Cadets at all levels shoot a minimum of once per semester.
What is an FTX?
Field Training Exercise—A chance to apply learned skills in the field. Usually FTXs are overnight and often encompass land navigation, marksmanship, and missions.
What is BOLC [Basic Officer Leader’s Course] (I, II, III)?
- BOLC I—ROTC, learn the basics of leadership, a pre-commissioning course
- BOLC II—Learn battle drills, maintenance, etc., basic duties and responsibilities of every officer, a post-commissioning course.
- BOLC III—Learn the basic skills and responsibilities specific to one’s branch.
Medical and Physical Requirements
What is a DoDMERB?
A DoDMERB is a Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board. It consists of an eye test, hearing test, and a physical.
If I have “X”… can I still contract?
It depends. Oftentimes if it is a disqualifier, a waiver will be required, and it may be waived.
What is a “remedial?”
A remedial is a need for more testing or clarification on the part of the DoDMERB after the initial physical.
Who pays for a remedial?
The student pays for a remedial.
What is a medical waiver?
A medical waiver is requested if you are medically disqualified for any reason from the DoDMERB physical. If disqualified, the ROTC department will help direct you on how to obtain a medical waiver, if applicable. The waiver will then be assessed by DoDMERB, and the result will be given to you.
What are the physical requirements for contracting?
Must be able to pass APFT and to meet height/weight requirements.
What are the physical requirements involved in the Corps of Cadets?
To obtain the Corps of Cadets class ring and the Military College of Vermont diploma, students must be able to pass an Army PT test. Aside from that, there is no minimum standard to stay in the Corps of Cadets.
What are the height/weight requirements?
There are very specific height/weight requirements for the Army; however, if one does not meet height/weight standards, they can be taped and still pass.
Are the PT standards different for special units?
Yes, they are higher, generally a 270 PT score for Ranger Company and MCW, and a 290 for the Rescue Team.
What facilities does Norwich University have for physical training?
The Norwich campus has a swimming pool, weight and cardio rooms, as well as many places on campus and off campus in the town of Northfield for running, walking, jogging, and ruck marching.
Contracting and Commissioning
What is my commitment if I contract?
- If on scholarship (GRFD, National Guard, Active Duty)—4 years active(Guard, Reserve), 4 years IRR (Reserve years can be replaced by active duty)
- o If not on scholarship—3 years active, 4 years reserve (Reserve years can be replaced by active duty)
What percent of Army ROTC Cadets commission?
Roughly 50 percent
What is the percentage of cadets who get their first branch choice?
In 2007—64 percent
What is the percentage of cadets who get one of their top three branch choices?
In 2007—80 percent
Can I branch into the Ranger Regiment or the Special Forces?
No, but one can apply to the Ranger Regiment after IOBC, and the Special Forces after one is lieutenant promotable.
What benefits do I get when I contract with Army ROTC?
- You will receive a bi-monthly stipend of an amount that increases annualy; you receive book money once per semester; you receive a one-time uniform allowance your junior year, or if you’ve contracted after junior year, you will receive it your senior year. Bottom line—no contract = no pay.
- Job security as an Army officer.
- Chances to attend Army schools (Airborne, Air Assault) and other training opportunities (Camp Buckner with West Point, Olmsted Scholarship)
- Increases likelihood of getting leadership positions in the Corps of Cadets, which in turn will help develop you.
Financial
What does an Army ROTC scholarship cover?
Full tuition fees, a bi-monthly stipend, a uniform allowance, and a book allowance.
Does an Army ROTC scholarship cover room and board?
No, but if the student’s GPA is above 2.75, the school will cover room and board under the I.D. White scholarship.
When do I apply for an Army ROTC scholarship?
- A national based scholarship can be applied for starting in the spring of one’s junior year of high school.
- Opportunities for applying for a campus based scholarship arise once a semester.

What is the process of obtaining a scholarship?
- National Based—Fill out an online application, www.armyrotc.com, then you will be contacted from Cadet Command for scheduling a DoDMERB, next you will go through an interview process either in person or over the phone or both, then an APFT or Presidential fitness test must be taken, and after all that you will receive a letter of acceptance if you are chosen.
- Campus Based—ROTC Instructor will inform and instruct the class as to when to apply and the process involved, the student must then schedule a DoDMERB physical, the student will then have to sit on a board—consisting of ROTC cadre, a teacher, and an upperclass student, an APFT must be taken and passed, a high school/college activities sheet must be filled out, the student must have at least a 2.5 GPA, and finally a 104R must be filled out outlining the classes the student will take to show that they will graduate on time. All applicants are then placed on an Order of Merit (OML) list and ranked. Scholarships will be given according to OML rankings.
Is it difficult to obtain an Army ROTC scholarship?
Not if you are qualified, In 2007 we gave out more than 70 scholarships
