Women's Rugby: Norwich 14 New Hampshire 0
Malden, MA - The Norwich Women's Rugby team improved to 2-0 in
the spring season with a 14-0 victory over UNH on Saturday. The
win gives the Cadets a 12-2 record overall since commencing play
last August.
Playing on the astro-turf at Malden Catholic High School, the Cadets
got off to an early lead when fullback Sybil Taunton
smashed her way through two defenders and stretched across the line
for the try. She converted the ensuing kick and the score was 7-0.
Flanker Charmaine Morris scored the second try
for the Cadets towards the end of the second half. Taunton was successful
in converting and the half ended 14-0.
The second half was an even battle and neither team managed to score.
"UNH is a bright, young squad with some serious speed,"
said NU Head Coach Austin Hall. "They will
be the team to beat in coming years. We saw some great individual
efforts from Norwich players, but we lacked a team-centered attack.
All this week, we will focus on team play. Thank you to Malden Catholic
for hosting and Coach (Bob) Weggler for putting the match together."
The second XV (b-side) was also victorious, claiming a 7-0 win.
Prop Mindy McDougal scored the first try of her career and center
Meghan Hoskins converted.
The Cadets will travel to the Cherry Blossom Tournament this weekend.
They will face American University, Catholic University, and William
& Mary over the two-day event.
