Women's Rugby: Norwich 10 Providence 5
Providence, RI - The Norwich Women's Rugby team opened the 2007
Spring season with a 10-5 victory over 2005 Division II National
Champions, Providence College. It was a beautiful spring day in
Providence and it marked the first time in over four months that
the lady ruggers played outdoors. A high level of excitement was
evident in both teams.
Sophomore wing Shelby Goudy opened scoring early
in the match on a high speed run around the corner of the defense.
Junior fullback Sybil Taunton converted the try
and the Cadets maintained a 7-0 lead at the half.
Taunton converted a penalty kick midway through the second half
to give Norwich a 10-0 lead. Providence rallied to score a try late
and cut the lead to 10-5.
"We're awake again," said NU Head Coach Austin
Hall. "We dusted off our mouth guards and got the
mud out of our boots. We looked good for the first match. We've
maintained a competent level of play over the off-season and have
four weeks to rediscover the beautiful style we are capable of playing.
I have no doubt we will be ready when the time comes."
The Second XV (B-side) was also victorious, winning 33-0. Meghan
Hoskins scored twice and April Cheney
touched down for a notable try in the effort.
The Cadets face UNH this weekend and have four weeks to prepare
for the Elite-8.
