Women's Lacrosse: Worcester State 18 Norwich 3
Worcester, MA - The Lancers defeated the Cadets in the inaugural meeting between the two team teams by the final tally of, 18-3, on a cold night at Coughlin Field. Worcester State improves the Lancers to 4-2 (3-0 NEWLA), while Norwich falls to 1-2 (1-1 NEWLA).
Worcester State got on the board first posting a, 2-0, lead after
goals by sophomore Shannon Feeley and Ann
Clark. Norwich responded with a goal by Kristen
Lewis to cut the Worcester State lead to, 2-1, less than
three minutes into the game. Brittany Jamieson
then scored a pair of goals to up the Lancer advantage to, 4-1,
before Norwich answered back with a score from Kathleen
Hennessy to reset the score at, 4-2, with 23:03 remaining
in the first half.
"Worcester State is a very fundamental team who works its transition
well," said NU Head Coach Tyler Renaud. "Clark
had a hand in almost all of their goals and really had our defense
on our heels throughout most the game."
Worcester State then separated for good as they ripped off five
unanswered goals and posted a 13-3 halftime lead.
In the second half, Worcester State netted five goals as goaltenders Lindsay Nunes and Caitlin Early combined to hold Norwich scoreless in the half.
Nunes made a pair of saves in getting her 4th win of the year.
NU keeper Katie Fraser stopped 10 Lancer shots
on the evening.
"I thought Kristen Lewis had an outstanding game for the Cadets,
as she dominated the draw, winning 16 of the 21 draws taken,"
said Renaud. "Kathleen Hennessy had her best game to date,
scoring two goals and leading our transition down the field. Credit
should be given to our goalie Katie Fraser, too, as she was under
the weather but still managed 10 saves and four caused turnovers,
picking off passes from behind the cage."
The Cadets were to have returned to the field on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game against Lasell College. However the game has been postponed to Friday, April 13, at 4:00 p.m. That means Norwich's next game will be on Wednesday, April 11, at Pine Manor at 4:00 p.m.
