NU Athletics: April 2007 Sports Recap

Baseball

The Cadets posted a final overall mark of 6-26 and 4-10 in GNAC play. Norwich missed out on the league post-season tournament, however, the team's co-captains made the all-conference teams. Catcher Aaron Ward was named to the All-GNAC First team, while outfielder John Healy made the All-GNAC Second team.

Ward was second in the GNAC in individual batting as he sported a .436 batting average. The senior led the Cadets in hits (34), runs (18), doubles (7), and slug percentage (.587). Ward also shared the lead in RBIs (15) and triples (3).

Healy is also among the top individual batters in the GNAC, finishing with a .362 average. The senior, who is among the NU pitching rotation, recorded 10 runs on 21 hits and a dozen RBIs. Healy also logged six doubles, one triple, and two homeruns, the only Norwich batter to homer this season.

Softball

After a promising start, the Cadets struggled down the stretch, winning one out of the final 12 games, finishing with an overall mark of 15-17 and 10-12 in the GNAC.

Three players were named to the 2007 GNAC All-Conference teams. Infielder Codi Collins and outfielder Justine Caron made the All-GNAC First team, while infielder Whitney Grennon made the All-GNAC Second team.

Collins was fifth in the league in individual batting with a .429 average. The junior tallied 31 runs on 42 hits and recorded 21 RBIs. Collins also recorded six doubles, two triples, and a pair of homeruns. In fielding, Collins sported a .970 percentage.

Caron finished the season with a .956 fielding average and a .300 batting average season, collecting 26 runs on 33 hits.

As a freshman, Grennon was tops in the GNAC with 11 homeruns. Grennon started all 32 games and finished with a .394 batting average. She led the Cadets in slug percentage (.828), RBIs (40), total bases (82), walks (14), and stolen bases (4).

Men's Lacrosse

The Cadets logged April wins against Johnson State (12-10) and Green Mountain (9-3) en route to a 3-10 overall record and 0-8 in the Pilgrim League.

Sophomore defenseman Derek Rondeau joined 51 other players on the Pilgrim League All-Academic team. Rondeau is a political science major and a corporal in the NU Corps of Cadets.

Women's Lacrosse

The Cadets wrapped a very successful first year as a varsity squad, finishing with an overall record of 7-5, a 4-3 mark in the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA), and a trip to the NEWLA post-season tournament.

Norwich was also recognized for individual successes as freshman midfield Allyson Daniels was named as the NEWLA Rookie of the Year, while NU Head Coach Tyler Renaud was voted as the Coach of the Year.

Daniels leads the Cadets in goals and assists with 36 scores and 17 helpers. The freshman was second in the league in both conference goals and points. Daniels also earned first team All-NEWLA honors.

Men's Tennis

The Cadets finished the 2007 season with an overall record of 4-5 and 1-4 in the GNAC. First-year head coach Kyle Dezotell was named as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches.

Women's Rugby

The Cadets made the long-awaited venture to Sanford, Florida for the USA Rugby Women's Collegiate National Championships in April. Norwich began its quest for a national championship with a convincing 53-38 win over Western Oregon in the semifinals. That set up a meeting with fellow semi winner Iowa State, which hammered Mary Washington, 63-0.

Iowa State built a 12-5 lead early and later boosted its lead to 16-5 when the Cadets mounted a serious comeback. NU cut into the lead, 16-12, before the Cyclones moved back to an eight-point lead at 20-12. With time winding down, the Cadets added another score to trail 20-19. Norwich had a shot at the go-ahead points, but the clock expired.

Iowa State went on to win the national championship in Palo Alto, California with a 26-19 victory over UC-Santa Cruz in the title game.

Ten players from Norwich were selected to the Vermont All-Star team and competed against other all-star teams from New England in early May. The Cadets were represented by forwards Stephanie Hurley, Coral Lore, Charity Lake, and Krista Barajas. Also on the squad were Norwich backs Miranda Hulse, Cassie Thompson, Christine Logigian, Ashley Lally, Brandy Young, and Sybil Taunton.
