Men's Lacrosse: MIT 15 Norwich 7
Cambridge, MA - Six goals by MIT in the fourth quarter helped seal
its 15-7 victory over Pilgrim Lacrosse League foe Norwich University
on Saturday afternoon. Tyler Sorba posted a game-high eight points
on five goals and three assists while Brennan Sherry contributed
seven goals for the Engineers (3-5, 1-3 Pilgrim). Cody Hardenburgh
paced the Cadets (1-6, 0-5 Pilgrim) with four goals.
Hardenburgh opened the scoring less than two minutes into the contest,
but Sorba registered the equalizer at the 7:43 mark. MIT took the
lead for good less than a minute later when Ryan Ballentine set
up Sherry. Ballentine earned his second assist of the day when Jonathan
Stolmeier found the back of the net with 1:49 on the clock. Norwich
narrowed its deficit to one (3-2) on Drew Caplin’s unassisted
strike with 23 seconds remaining.
The Engineers extended their advantage with a goal by Stolmeier
and an extra-man score by Sherry that was set up by Ballentine.
On their next possession, the Cadets’ Kyle Marzeoti found
the back of the net. Stolmeier set up Sherry for his third goal
of the day, which raised MIT’s margin to 6-3 before the intermission.
Dylan Roden continued the Engineers’ scoring and Sorba earned
the assists on a pair of extra-man goals by Sherry in the third
quarter. Norwich stayed within striking distance as it responded
with three goals as well. Hardenburgh connected on a feed from Nick
Talcott and then collected a pass from Marzeoti that resulted in
a man-down goal. Sam Glanders converted a pass from John Guarnieri
with 18 seconds remaining in the frame that made the score 9-6.
Sorba single-handedly ended the Cadets’ rally as he rattled
off three consecutive goals during the first three minutes of the
last quarter. Roden found Sherry for his sixth goal of day before
Hardenburgh notched Norwich’s lone goal of the frame. Sorba
was factor in MIT’s final goals as he posted an unassisted
score and then set up Sherry with 1:24 left to play.
Patrick Shannon paced the Engineers with five groundballs as Zach
Brewer collected 14 saves. For the Cadets, Marzeoti picked up a
game-high seven groundballs while Joe Phelan finished with 10 saves.
Next up for MIT will be a home Pilgrim League game against Babson
College on Wednesday, April 18. Norwich will continue its road trip
at Daniel Webster College on Monday, April 16.
