Hartwick Sneaks Past Norwich, 19-13
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Jason Boltus accounted for 402 yards of total offense and three touchdowns as Hartwick defeated Norwich, 19-13, in an Empire 8 football game played on Saturday afternoon at a rain-drenched Sabine Field. The field turned into a quagmire early in the game it rained steadily throughout the duration of the contest.
The Hawks (6-2, 3-1 Empire 8) jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead and led 19-0 at halftime, before hanging on for the victory.
The Cadets (2-6, 0-4 Empire 8) were led by Darnell Jackson, who piled up 287 all-purpose yards and scored both of NU’s touchdowns. The speedy running back from Miami, Fla., got Norwich back in the game with an 82-yard kickoff return to open the second half. Jackson added a 57-yard receiving touchdown in the fourth quarter when he took a short pass and rumbled untouched down the right sideline.
Hartwick jumped on top with 3:06 remaining in the first quarter as Boltus ran for a 25-yard touchdown. The Hawks made it 13-0 later in the period when Boltus hooked up with Jack Phelan for an 85-yard touchdown pass. Phelan scored on a nine-yard touchdown reception midway through the second quarter to account for Hartwick’s final points.
Boltus gained 145 yards on the ground, while totaling another 257 through the air. Phelan led all receivers with four receptions for 131 yards and the two touchdowns.
Jackson finished with 122 rushing yards on 20 carries, marking his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season. He added six receptions for 66 yards and the one touchdown. Jackson also added 99 yards in kickoff returns.
The sloppy conditions led to seven combined turnovers. Richard Cumby led the NU charge on defense, accounting for a game-high eight tackles, two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
Norwich returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 3, when the Cadets close out their 2007 home slate against Empire 8 foe Utica. Kickoff from Sabine Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
