Baseball: St. Michael's Sweeps Norwich

Northfield, VT - The Purple Knights registered a pair of two-run victories over the Cadets in a doubleheader at Garrity Field. 7-5 was the final in game one, while 10-8 was the final in game two.

In the opener, St. Michael's (15-19) got off to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first capped off by John Kunkel's RBI. The Purple Knights added two more runs in the second for a 5-0 lead as Ed Fennessey logged his second run with Ryan Reather posting the other run. The Cadets (5-23) scored their first run in the bottom of the second as James Kiritsy crossed the plate on Steve Schlusemeyer's RBI. Fennessey rounded out SMC's scoring with a run in the fourth and sixth inning. Norwich's Rob Knox and Kyle Jolin added runs in the sixth inning, while Alex Duplessis and Domenic Sorrentino scored in the seventh, but the Purple Knights held on for the win. Phil Jennette was the winning pitcher for St. Mike's, while John Driscoll took the loss for Norwich.

In game two, the Cadets held a 2-1 advantage in the top of the fifth inning when the Purple Knights exploded for seven runs highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Evan Grenier. SMC capped off its scoring with two runs in the top of the sixth. Norwich responded with six runs in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by Kiritsy's double. The Cadets got the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh, but St. Mike's relief pitcher Billy Gamache held on for the win. Ricky Hubbard picked up the win, while Norwich's Jason Nickerson took the loss.

The Purple Knights return to the diamond on Sunday with a doubleheader at Amherst starting at 1:00 pm. The Cadets will be back at Garrity Field on Tuesday with a 3:30 game against Plymouth State.
