Baseball: Wildcats Sweep Cadets

East Providence, RI – Johnson & Wales swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Norwich at Pierce Field on Saturday afternoon. JWU took an 8-6 victory in the opener and completed the sweep with a 21-9 victory in the nightcap.

In the first game, the two teams traded leads in the early going with Norwich holding a 6-5 lead after a two run double by Kyle Kenia in the bottom of the sixth. Johnson & Wales rallied in the top of the seventh, when an RBI single by Jonathan Melendez and a two-run double by Mauricio Pena gave the Wildcats the 8-6 lead. Sal Savo pitched a perfect seventh inning for his third save of the season, giving JWU the 8-6 victory. Kenia was 2-for-3 with three RBI in the setback for Norwich. Josh Hodge went 5.2 innings with eight strikeouts for the Wildcats, while Bobby Gilbert picked up the win in relief.

In the nightcap, Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early 8-2 lead after a grand slam by Brad Jackson in the top of the third. The Wildcats then built on their lead in the top of the fourth when Hurley set the school’s all-time home record with the 23rd of his career and eighth this season to give the team the 11-2 advantage. A two-run home run by Melendez in the top of the sixth gave the Wildcats the 14-5 lead. Norwich cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth when they tallied four runs, including a two-run single by Dominic Sorrentino to make the score 14-9. JWU added seven runs in the top of the seventh, including a two-run single by Mike MacKay to increase their lead to 21-9. Victor Silva picked up the win on the mound for Johnson & Wales, allowing five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work.

Johnson & Wales is now 13-12 overall, 5-3 in the GNAC, while Norwich is 2-10, 1-3 in league play.
