Baseball: Castleton State Sweeps Norwich

Castleton, VT - The Spartans took a pair of non-league games versus the Cadets, winning the opener 16-5 and taking the nightcap 7-0.

Rob Turner went the distance for the Spartans in the opener, allowing seven hits and five earned, while striking out eight.

The Cadets sent eleven men to the plate in the second inning, scoring four runs to take a brief 4-3 lead, but the Castleton offense was too much as they smacked 19 hits en route to the win.

Kyle Jolin led Norwich with a pair of singles and two RBI. Domenic Sorrentino also had two hits and scored a run.

The Spartan offense received multi-hit games from seven out nine batters, highlighted by senior third-baseman Phil Puleo. Puleo went 3-for-4 with a double, and a homerun, four RBI and three runs scored. Anthony DiPietrantonio also went deep for Castleton, a solo-shot in the third. Ryan Bouck was 3 for 5 with three RBI, while Travis Bass also had a three-hit performance with one RBI and three runs scored.

In the nightcap, Castleton starter, Brandon Heck, gave up a lead-off single to James Ramsey, then proceeded to retire the next 18 straight Cadets he faced. Heck hit Timothy O’Connor with a pitch to lead off the seventh, and allowed a one-out single to Ryan Hampton for the only three batters to reach base. The sophomore right-hander struck out seven in his first career start, earning the shut-out.

Travis Bass collected three more hits, and scored three more runs in the nightcap, upping his season batting average to a team-best .446. Lauck Blake had two hits, and one RBI while stealing a base and scoring two runs. Chris Ragis also had two hits and two RBI for 17-9 Castleton.

With the loss, Norwich falls to 5-21 on the season.
