Help NU meet the Kresge Challenge!

The Kresge Foundation, a national leader in building institutional capacity at nonprofit organizations, has approved a $500,000 challenge grant to Norwich University for construction of the Wise Campus Center. To meet the challenge, Norwich must raise more than $2.2 million in new gifts and pledges restricted to the campus center by December 31, 2007.

One of the most prominent grant-making institutions in the nation, The Kresge Foundation helps universities, hospitals, and other nonprofit organizations expand and strengthen their base of support through new and increased contributions for capital projects. The process to receive a grant from The Kresge Foundation is extremely competitive. In their review process, Foundation staff members and Trustees evaluate an organization’s financial stability, existing base of support, vision for growing that base, commitment to diversity, and other factors.

The key element of the challenge is how Norwich University will leverage support for the Wise Campus Center to expand its base of donors who will support the institution – through ongoing financial support and volunteer service – long after the construction project is complete.

“With the aid of this challenge grant, we hope that your campaign can become an even more strategic opportunity for you to connect with your stakeholders and reach out to new donors, volunteers, participants, and the general community,” said Rip Rapson, President and CEO of The Kresge Foundation. “Your compelling plan to sustain the higher levels of giving after the campaign concludes will help strengthen your organization well into the future.”

President Richard W. Schneider expressed his appreciation for the challenge grant and encouraged all Norwich alumni, faculty, and staff to take advantage of this opportunity to bolster the University financially and to increase the level of volunteer engagement.

“That we have received this challenge grant from a highly respected foundation through a competitive process should make everyone in the Norwich Community very proud,” said President Schneider. “We are going to make a real effort to get our younger alumni involved in this challenge, because they know better than anyone the need for a modern campus center.”

Norwich Forever! campaign chair Pierson Mapes '59, termed the challenge grant an inspiration for all Norwich alumni to support construction of the new campus center.

“This is a special opportunity for Norwich to construct a top-flight facility that will improve the student life experience while also involving more alumni in the long-term growth and strengthening of our University." Mapes said. "But it’s critical to remember that we must raise the entire $2.2 million to receive the challenge grant.”

The 71,500-square-foot Wise Campus Center is a major component of the five-year, $55 million Norwich Forever! campaign. Norwich broke ground on the new campus center in May 2006, and the building is scheduled for completion in August 2007. With a total price tag of $20.5 million, the facility will be constructed through a combination of private gifts, bonds, and operating funds.

In addition, Norwich has begun $4.5 million in related infrastructure upgrades, including the installation of new underground power lines and steam pipes that will serve the campus center and other buildings.

The Kresge Foundation, based in Troy, Michigan, is an independent, private foundation created in 1924 by the personal gifts of Sebastian S. Kresge. The Foundation is not affiliated with any corporation or organization.

Through its grantmaking programs, The Kresge Foundation seeks to strengthen nonprofit organizations by catalyzing their growth, connecting them to their stakeholders, and challenging greater support through grants.

In 2005, the Foundation awarded 212 grants totaling more than $131 million to organizations in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa, and Mexico.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Kresge Foundation Challenge?
The Kresge Foundation in October 2006 awarded a $500,000 challenge grant to support construction of the Wise Campus Center. Receipt of this challenge grant is contingent on the University raising $2.2 million in gifts and pledges restricted to the new campus center.

How long will the Challenge last?
Norwich must reach the $2.2 million goal by January 1, 2008.

Who can help Norwich meet this Challenge?
Alumni, businesses, other foundations, and all friends of Norwich University.

I only graduated from Norwich a few years ago and I can’t make a big gift. Would a gift of $50 or $100 from me really make a difference?
Yes, it would. Norwich is particularly interested in alumni who are in their 20s or early 30s helping with The Kresge Foundation Challenge. If you graduated from Norwich during the past 15 years, you know how Harmon Hall was showing its age. Making a gift toward the Wise Campus Center – even a modest gift – is a wonderful way to help our students.

In fact, the purpose of the Challenge isn’t simply to raise $2.2 million; it’s also to get more alumni and friends of the University involved with Norwich – as donors, volunteers, contacts for internships, and all sorts of other ways

What about School of Graduate Studies alumni?
Norwich is asking SGS alumni to support a specific part of the campus center’s construction. Because SGS residencies take place during the summer months – often when the weather is hot – Norwich is encouraging SGS alumni to help with the costs of installing the campus center’s air conditioning system. The Wise Campus Center will be only the second building on the Norwich campus with air conditioning.

How can I make a gift toward the Challenge?
You can send a check to Norwich University’s Office of Institutional Advancement (158 Harmon Drive, Northfield, Vermont, 05663), call the Office (802-485-2307), or make a gift online.

Whichever way you choose, be sure to note that the gift or pledge is restricted to the Wise Campus Center.

Is it easy to make a gift toward the Wise Campus Center online?
Absolutely! If you are already registered with the Norwich University Online Community, simply click here and fill out the online form. It takes only a couple of minutes.

If you’re not registered yet with the Online Community, call the Norwich University Alumni Office toll-free at 1-877-485-2019.

If Norwich raises some of the money toward the Challenge, will the Foundation pro-rate the grant?
No! It’s an all-or-nothing Challenge. Norwich must raise at least $2.2 million in gifts and pledges restricted to the Wise Campus Center by the end of 2007 to receive the challenge grant.

Why is the Wise Campus Center important?
While the University has a broad range of interscholastic athletic teams, intramural sports, students clubs, and volunteer opportunities, Norwich does not feature a central meeting place where all students can gather to study, socialize, and rest. Harmon Hall, constructed in 1955, may have been sufficient in the 1950s when the University’s total enrollment was less than 1,000, but today’s college students have come to expect a more engaging campus center where they can eat, study, and generally enjoy time with friends in comfortable surroundings.

The Wise Campus Center will enhance students’ experience at Norwich and strengthen their lifelong ties to the institution. In addition, the new campus center will make Norwich more competitive with other institutions of higher education.

What is The Kresge Foundation?
The Kresge Foundation is an independent foundation based in Troy, Michigan. It was established in 1924 by Sebastian S. Kresge, founder of the S.S. Kresge department stores, which later became Kmart. The foundation is not connected to Kmart or any other business.

What does The Kresge Foundation do?
Its principal mission “is to strengthen nonprofit organizations that advance the well-being of humanity.” The Kresge Foundation does this primarily by awarding challenge grants to strengthen the institutional capacity of universities, colleges, hospitals, museums, human service agencies, and other nonprofit organizations. The Trustees of The Kresge Foundation believe construction projects provide an excellent opportunity for nonprofit organizations to expand and strengthen their volunteer base.
