Norwich Forever! Campaign News

Year of the Challenge!
In the traditional Chinese calendar, this is the Year of the Pig. At Norwich it could be called the Year of the Challenge. Two foundations have awarded major challenge grants to the University, and alumni giving is essential for Norwich to meet both challenges.

The nationally recognized Kresge Foundation will award $500,000 to Norwich if the University can raise $2.2 million for the Wise Campus Center by January 1, 2008. Launched during the autumn of 2006, The Kresge Foundation Challenge is well underway, and as of January 31 had elicited $964,303 in gifts and pledges. That represents 43% of the $2.2 million Challenge goal.

It's important for all alumni to remember that the Kresge Foundation Challenge is not pro-rated; Norwich must raise the full $2.2 million to receive the challenge grant. Qualifying gifts and pledges for the Kresge Foundation Challenge can come from alumni, parents, friends, foundations, and corporations. To help Norwich meet the Challenge, however, donors must restrict their gifts and pledges to the Wise Campus Center.

Efforts to raise alumni awareness of a second challenge grant will ramp up in March. The George F. and Sybil H. Fuller Foundation will match up to $100,000 in 2007 and $100,000 again in 2008 for every dollar in gifts and pledges that Norwich receives from alumni who graduated since 1986 and who are making their first gift to the University.

While the Fuller Foundation is restricting its grant support to the Wise Campus Center, any gift from a first-time donor -- such as gifts and pledges for scholarships, academic programming, the Corps of Cadets, or unrestricted support -- will count toward the Fuller Foundation Challenge.

Alumni from the classes of 1986 through 2006 will soon see an appeal letter in their mailbox encouraging them to help Norwich meet the Fuller Foundation Challenge. The letter will emphasize that this Challenge in effect provides alumni with the opportunity to double their first gift to the University.

To learn about either Challenge, call (802) 485-2307 or email the Office of Institutional Advancement at advancement@norwich.edu.

Attention Old Guard: Mapes Match doubles your gift!

At the Partridge Society luncheon during Homecoming Weekend, Norwich Forever! campaign chair Pier Mapes ’59 announced a special matching gift opportunity for the Class of 1957 and the Old Guard. Pier and his wife, Pat, will match planned gifts of $10,000 or larger made by a member of the Class of 1957 or older that meet the following criteria:
  • Bequests through a will or living trust.
  • Life insurance policies that are paid up (no premiums due for the life of the policy) and extend for the life of the donor.
  • Charitable Gift Annuities held at Norwich (only the charitable deduction portion will be matched).
  • Charitable Remainder Trusts with Norwich as a beneficiary (only the charitable deduction portion will be matched).
  • Qualifying gifts must be new gifts and documentation must be provided. Donors who have already notified us of their bequest intentions are not eligible to have it doubled (if they increase their bequest, the additional amount is available for the match).
The Mapes Match will remain in effect through Homecoming 2007. For more information, contact Priscilla Gilbert, Planned Giving Officer, at (802) 485-2301 or pgilbert@norwich.edu.

New IRA legislation increases charitable giving options!
Do you have unneeded retirement assets that you will be forced to withdraw when you turn 70 1/2? Are you concerned about the impact this will have on your tax bracket and eligibility for benefits, credits and other deductions? Do you want to make a gift to Norwich? Now, after seven years of deliberations, there is a temporary solution to all of these problems. Until year-end 2007, individuals will be allowed to give their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) directly to non-profit organizations, such as Norwich, with no tax consequences. [more]
