Question of the Month:
As we head into snow season in Vermont, do you recall any activities other than skiing that you did as a student to relieve cabin fever? Please send your responses to pubrel@norwich.edu, and we will share them with our readers in the February edition of @NU.
Last month we asked folks to write in with their memorable Norwich skiing memories. We are pleased to publish their stories [here].

Norwich alumna makes sports history
Future Norwich Hall of Famer Emily Caruso '00 secured her position on the 2007 U.S. Pan American Games Team on the final day of shots at the USA Shooting 3X Air Match. Caruso, a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team, shot a 498.2 in the third day of competition for a three-day total of 1399.1. Her score, the highest of any U.S. competitor, made her the automatic selection for Team USA. In Saturday’s preliminary rounds, Caruso shot a perfect 400 to etch her name into shooting history. The score had not been shot by an American in competition in six years.

Alumni authors
Harry Sholk ‘52 has completed his third historical novel, From Petition to Arms; A Story of Friends Caught Up in the American Fight for Independence. In a tale of differing political ideologies, former childhood friends--two Americans and one Briton--are separated in adolescence but meet again during the American Revolution. As the fighting unfolds, the friends find themselves torn between their own beliefs and a desire to resume their former friendship. From Petition to Arms and a previous novel, Drumbeats in the Valley: A Story of Life at Norwich University in the Early Nineteenth Century, are published by Infinity Publishing, Inc. Excerpts from both novels are available at the publisher's Web site: www.bbotw.com.
William Koss's ‘91 new book, Six Years That Shook the World--An Insider's Guide to Understanding Technology Markets, reveals the analytic scoop on the Internet and telecommunications boom of the 1990s and the subsequent crash, but also points out new directions in the future for the telecom industries. In his book Koss suggests that, as technology markets push new ideas forward, political, economic and social change are created on a global level. Koss, who has more than seventeen years of experience in the networking industry, is the former VP of sales for Nortel Networks, and a former VP of global business alliances at Ciena. Six Years That Shook the World is available at the Amazon and Borders Web sites.

Kresge Challenge update!
Norwich University is one-fifth of the way toward its Kresge Foundation Challenge goal to raise $2.2 million for the Wise Campus Center. As of Dec. 15, the University had raised $430,691 in gifts and pledges.
Norwich has until Jan. 1, 2008, to meet the terms of the challenge grant awarded by The Kresge Foundation. If the University raises the full $2.2 million, the foundation will provide Norwich with $500,000 to complete the fundraising for the Wise Campus Center, due to open in August. The challenge is not pro-rated; Norwich must raise the full $2.2 million to receive the challenge grant.
The Kresge Foundation awarded the challenge grant in late September with the twin goals of expanding the University’s long-term base of support and finishing the fundraising for the campus center. To learn more about this challenge, visit the Kresge Challenge Special Edition of @NU or call (802) 485-2307.
Attention Old Guard: Mapes Match doubles your gift!
At the Partridge Society luncheon during Homecoming Weekend, Norwich Forever! campaign chair Pier Mapes ’59 announced a special matching gift opportunity for the Class of 1957 and the Old Guard. Pier and his wife, Pat, will match planned gifts of $10,000 or larger made by a member of the Class of 1957 or older that meet the following criteria:
- Bequests through a will or living trust;
- Life insurance policies that are paid up (no premiums due for the life of the policy) and extend for the life of the donor;
- Charitable Gift Annuities held at Norwich (only the charitable deduction portion will be matched).
- Charitable Remainder Trusts with Norwich as a beneficiary (only the charitable deduction portion will be matched).
- Qualifying gifts must be new gifts and documentation must be provided. Donors who have already notified us of their bequest intentions are not eligible to have it doubled (if they increase their bequest, the additional amount is available for the match).
The Mapes Match will remain in effect through Homecoming 2007. For more information, contact Priscilla Gilbert, Planned Giving Officer, at (802) 485-2301 or pgilbert@norwich.edu.
New IRA legislation increases charitable giving options!
Do you have unneeded retirement assets that you will be forced to withdraw when you turn 70 ˝? Are you concerned about the impact this will have on your tax bracket and eligibility for benefits, credits and other deductions? Do you want to make a gift to Norwich? Now, after seven years of deliberations, there is a temporary solution to all of these problems. Until year-end 2007, individuals will be allowed to give their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) directly to non-profit organizations, such as Norwich, with no tax consequences. [More] |
