Question of the Month:
Some time ago we asked folks to send in memorable skiing stories from their days on “the Hill.” If you missed that opportunity, you now have another chance! Please email your best downhill (or cross-country) “thrills, chills and spills,” and we will share them with our readers in the January edition of @NU. Email your stories to pubrel@norwich.edu, and include your name and class year. All submissions will be considered for publication.
Thank you to those of you who shared your memorable NU roommate stories with us. We are pleased to publish them here.

New legislation increases charitable giving options!
Do you have unneeded retirement assets that you will be forced to withdraw when you turn 70½? Are you concerned about the impact this will have on your tax bracket and eligibility for benefits, credits and other deductions? Do you want to make a gift to Norwich? Now, after seven years of deliberations, there is a temporary solution to all of these problems. Until year-end 2007, individuals will be allowed to give their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) directly to non-profit organizations, such as Norwich, with no tax consequences. [more]
Help NU meet the Kresge Challenge!
As of mid-November, Norwich has received more than $300,000 in gifts and pledges toward the $2.2 million Kresge Foundation Challenge. Norwich has until January 1, 2008, to meet the terms of the challenge grant awarded by The Kresge Foundation in September. If the University raises the full $2.2 million, the foundation will provide Norwich with $500,000.
All funds raised through The Kresge Foundation Challenge will support the Wise Campus Center, construction of which began in May 2006. With a total price tag of $20.5 million, the University is building the facility with a combination of private gifts, bonds, and operating funds. In addition, Norwich has begun $4.5 million in related infrastructure upgrades. The project is slated to be completed by August 2007.

Double the impact of your gift!
At the Partridge Society luncheon during Homecoming Weekend, Norwich Forever! campaign chair Pier Mapes ’59 announced a special matching gift opportunity for the Class of 1957 and the Old Guard. Initially offering to match bequests made through a will or living trust, Pier and Pat will now match gifts of $10,000 or larger made by a member of the Class of 1957 or older that fit into the following criteria:
- Bequests through a will or living trust.
- Life insurance policies that are paid up (no premiums due for the life of the policy) and extend for the life of the donor.
- Charitable Gift Annuities held at Norwich (only the charitable deduction portion will be matched).
- Charitable Remainder Trusts with Norwich as a beneficiary (only the charitable deduction portion will be matched).
- Qualifying gifts must be new gifts and documentation must be provided. Donors who have already notified us of their bequest intentions are not eligible to have it doubled (if they increase their bequest, the additional amount is available for the match).
The Mapes Match will remain in effect through Homecoming 2007. For more information, contact Priscilla Gilbert, Planned Giving Officer, at (802) 485-2301 or pgilbert@norwich.edu.

The Norwich University Cemetery
There are many for whom "The Hill" is a home away from home, so it is not surprising that some choose Norwich as a final resting place. Known locally as "Dole Farm," the Norwich University Cemetery overlooks the campus and provides a beautiful setting in which to memorialize Norwich graduates, friends of the University, Trustees, Fellows, and other members of the Norwich community.
For more information or to secure a plot, please contact Priscilla Gilbert, Norwich University Cemetery Assn., 158 Harmon Drive, Northfield, VT 05663, 802.485.2742, or pgilbert@Norwich.edu.
The Ernest Harmon Memorial Wall
Inscribed on the wall are the names of alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of Norwich University who have made a significant contribution to the improvement of the institution. The list of names, recorded by year of death, commemorates a commitment to Norwich that has sustained the University in the past and will carry it proudly into the future.
For more information about the Harmon Memorial Wall, please contact Priscilla Gilbert, Planned Giving Officer, 158 Harmon Drive, Northfield, Vermont 05663, 802.485.2301, pgilbert@norwich.edu.
