FAQ for Traditional Students
Why should I attend Norwich as a traditional student?
Even though Norwich is a small private college, we have the amenities to compete with many large universities, including 29 academic programs, 19 varsity sports and an unlimited number of student clubs and organizations. We are recognized throughout the country for many of our academic programs including:
- The nationally recognized David Crawford School of Engineering
- Our Emmy award winning Communications program
- The only accredited 5-year Masters of Architecture program in New England
- Our Nursing program, recognized by Army ROTC as a program of excellence
- Our Computer Security and Information Assurance program, recognized by the National Security Agency and the Department of Defense as a program of academic excellence
Does Norwich provide a supportive academic environment?
Absolutely. We give our students the kind of attention they need to succeed by maintaining an average of one faculty member for every 14 students. Additionally, our Learning Support Center is staffed by professionals who meet with students on an individual basis and lend support to all facets of academic life, from improving study skills to tutoring sessions in a specific academic area. The staff is also trained to help meet the specific needs of students diagnosed with learning disabilities.
Will I be taught by teaching assistants at Norwich?
Norwich University does not use teaching assistants. The use of graduate students as teaching assistants is characteristic of institutions that have residential graduate programs. All instructors at Norwich University are faculty members. Our small student/faculty ratio allows each faculty member to know their students on an individual basis and they are readily available to provide assistance.
Are there opportunities for traditional students to gain leadership experience?
Absolutely. Traditional students participate in the Honor Council, Student Government, Activities Council and Leaders Emerging and Developing. For more information, refer to the leadership opportunities page.
How integrated are the traditional and military students?
All of our students are completely integrated in the classroom, on the playing field, and in extracurricular activities. However, traditional students don't participate in military training and the two lifestyles have separate residences.
What will it be like to live on the campus with members of the Corps of Cadets?
Friendships abound among all students at Norwich. A walk across campus or a look inside a classroom or the gymnasium show that all of our students learn to respect and enjoy people of different lifestyles, cultures, religious affiliations, and political persuasions.
How safe is the campus?
Norwich has one of the safest campuses in the country. Vermont has a very low crime rate to begin with and, combined with the military presence on campus, Norwich provides an extremely safe learning environment for all of its students. Students can feel comfortable walking on campus at night, going to the library, or returning from a workout at the gym.
What kind of extracurricular activities would be available?
Norwich boasts 18 varsity sports, three club sports, and over 80 student run club and organizations. Our students are "participators." Over 90% are involved in at least one activity outside of the classroom.
