Computer Services
We are excited that you are planning to attend Norwich University this fall and we hope to help make your experience with technology positive and successful.
The following information should help in your preparations for your arrival this fall.
Norwich University provides student computing labs for student access to productivity software, email, World Wide Web access, Internet activity, our library systems and discipline-specific applications. The University maintains seven computer centers on campus as well as public machines in the library and various departmental student labs. The University standard productivity suite is Microsoft Office and Corel Suite.
Personally owned computers provide greater access to computing power. Machines with faster processors will lengthen the life of the machine. Laptop computers do provide for convenience and mobility and are recommended for the dormitories. However, these systems are usually purchased for a significant premium over desktop computers.
Information Technology Services suggests the following configuration as a minimum:
PC minimum requirements
- Computer with Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista operating system
- 1.8 MHz processor or equivalent
- A minimum 2GB of RAM (RAM is a good investment and can significantly increase the response time and computer output.)
- 80GB hard drive
- CD-ROM/DVD re-writable drive
Macintosh minimum requirements
- Mac OS 10.4 or higher
- G4 of 1.4 GHz or better
- A minimum 512 GB of RAM
- 40GB hard drive
An inkjet printer is a good option to reduce reliance on University laser printers for output. All student rooms have a network port, which allows students access to the Internet, including web access to email and the library.
Student Telephone Service: Each student dormitory room has one live telephone jack programmed for on campus calls. Students need to contact our student billing company, Resicom, to obtain a Personal Authorization Code (PAC). PAC’s are needed for all telephone calls, including toll free and calls made with a calling card (charges are not incurred for toll free calls). For all telephone rates, please review the brochure from Resicom. Students need to bring their own telephones as Norwich University does not provide telephones in dormitory rooms.
Network & email accounts: Students use the network to communicate with other students and faculty, for online library catalog searches and to access services for programming and graphics classes. New student accounts are sent to students’ homes upon acceptance to Norwich University. It is strongly advised that these account sheets are brought to Norwich University at the beginning of the school year. If account information is left at home the passwords can be reset upon proper identification at the Computer Services Help Desk.
Computer Services - NUCERT - Student Computer Repair Center: Norwich operates a student computer repair center staffed by Norwich University students under the supervision of Computer Services staff. The center is open on weekdays to assist students with hardware/software problems they may encounter with their personally owned computers. The center also provides network interface cards and cables, at cost, which enable students to connect their computers to the Internet through the network connections provided in their dorm rooms.
