Working With Your Admissions Counselor
First off, what exactly is an Admissions Counselor? You know that they call you every month, and send you emails once in a while, but who are they? Well your Admissions Counselor is assigned to you as soon as you apply and it’s our job to work with you and your family throughout the application process. Basically, our main role is to help counsel you through the college search process and help you to determine if Norwich University is the best fit for you academically, socially, and financially. Your Admissions Counselor is also the person who will be gathering together all of your application materials, reviewing your file and making the recommendation on whether you should or should not be accepted.
Many students do not realize just how important their relationship with their Admissions Counselor is. Most students imagine us as a large group of dark-suit-wearing, cigar smoking, crotchety old men who meet in smoky conference rooms to determine the fate of our applicants. The fact is, we here at the Norwich Admissions Office are all pretty young, generally nice people and would probably wear our pajamas to work if we were allowed to. And our job is to make our applicant’s files as strong as possible before a decision is made on them. We are your biggest advocates during the admissions process, and it is to your benefit to build a strong relationship with your Counselor. It can seem a bit intimidating at first what with us being the ones to “decide your future”, but once you start talking to us on a more personal level, you will quickly come to realize that we want nothing but the best for you.
So, with that being said, how does one go about developing this relationship? The key is constant communication. Your Admissions Counselor will be calling or emailing you on a regular basis, and the best thing you can do is to return a phone call or write us back an email. Heck, if it’s easier for you, just shoot us an instant message over AIM! We’re here to answer all of your questions and also to make sure that you’re on the right track with your application. In addition to making sure that you’re sending in all of the right materials at the right time, the communication and relationship you build with your Counselor allows for him or her to get to know the real you, not just the paper version of you. And the more we know about our applicants, the better equipped we’ll be when we finally make a decision on your application. Also, don’t be afraid to be you when you are talking with your Counselor. Being open and honest with us can only help you, so don’t be scared to talk to us and let us know what’s going on.
So remember, your Counselor’s job is to do nothing but help you and your family through this crazy, stressful, process. Take advantage of us and never be afraid to ask questions or check in just to check in. We love to hear from you!
