    Packing 101

    A few tips:

    • Don’t bring everything you own. Leave something to claim your turf at home.
    • If there are clothes in your closet you haven’t worn in the past two years, leave them there; chances are you won’t start wearing them when you get to Norwich.
    • It does get cold, but you won’t need your winter gear right away. A good idea is to pre-pack your winter items and then have your parents ship them out later. If you are heading home for Thanksgiving break, that would be the perfect time to bring home your spring and summer clothes and grab what you will need for the winter.
    • Please note: NU does have a dress and grooming standards policy. See: Student Rules & Regulations, Chap. 3, Sec. VII. We suggest you take the time to become knowledgeable of the policy as you pack. Special attention should be given to the Hat Policy.
    • Plan on accumulating a lot of stuff over the year; a little here and there adds up.
    • NU will be providing every new student with a Student Planner and Calendar. So don’t worry about purchasing one. The planner will provide you with important student services information, rules and regulations and a calendar.

While you shouldn’t bring everything, there are a few comforts from home you don’t want to forget:

    • An iron and small ironing board
    • Stamps
    • A back rest—a necessity for bedtime studying and late-night chats.
    • An alarm clock—dreaded but a must! Professors hate latecomers.
    • A throw rug or slippers—the residence halls are not carpeted; your feet will thank you.
    • Laundry bag/basket—be prepared with quarters. The cost of washing and drying laundry is $1.25 per load. You will be able to purchase quarters in the Service Stations, located in every residence hall. These stores can also provide you with dryer sheets, detergent, and snacks while you do your laundry.
    • Long Sheets—the beds are longer than average. Bed and Bath and JC Penney usually offer good buys.
    • Only three-prong extension cords and surge protectors are allowed for expanding your electrical needs. Hint: there is an extreme fire hazard surrounding overloaded outlets, so do not bring outlet extenders or regular 2-prong extension cords.
    • Wastebasket
    • Headphones—remember your roommate might not like the same music you do.
    • Sewing kit
    • Desk lamp or clip lamp
    • Curtains or blinds—Norwich provides gold curtains
    • Dictionary and thesaurus
    • Computer. Norwich has computer labs open 24 hours. Email and Internet service is accessible in every residence hall room.
    • Shower caddy, shower shoes, and a bathrobe are essential.
    • Hangers
    • A mug, cup, plate, bowl, can opener, and utensils
    • Wall decorations
    • Small coffee maker and hot pot
    • Plants—nothing brightens a room like a hanging plant
    • Pens, pencils, erasers, paper etc. (make sure you are prepared academically, as well)

    Do not bring the following:

    • Your dog, cat, gerbil, mouse, snake…NO pets are allowed in the residence halls
    • Hot plate or mini stove
    • Halogen lamps
    • Cinder blocks, bricks, or crates for lofting beds
    • Drugs, alcohol, weapons, fireworks (this includes alcohol trophies, posters, or souvenirs); there is zero tolerance for these items at NU
    • Toasters
    • 2-prong extension cords
    • Subwoofers or gigantic speakers
    • Air conditioner
    • A car, unless given permission by Dean Mathis; contact her at 802.485.2640 for more information
