Lifestyle: Corps of Cadets
Majors: health science, athletic training

Jamie Barron knows the key to a successful Norwich experience: determination. Now in her third year on campus, the Allentown, Penn., native remembers the first day of Rook Week as if it were yesterday.

In order to get through this place you have to be determined to apply yourself. If you want to get through it you have to want to do it, you can’t just go through the phases.

“I remember the speech from the first day of Rook Week,” she said. “I remember the speaker saying that this was going to be the hardest week of our lives. And I expected that, but as long as you apply yourself, it’s not that difficult.”

From the get-go Barron understood that applying herself meant taking her Corps responsibilities seriously while also being mindful of academics as well. Not a problem: her first semester she pulled down an Academic Gold Star for a 3.67 grade-point average (GPA) and she continues to hold steady with a 3.45 GPA.

Barron, who says she chose to attend Norwich because she wanted the “whole military experience,” doesn’t have plans to enter the armed forces after graduation. Rather, she has her sights set on graduate school to expand her Norwich education.

“I decided to study health science and athletic training because I really enjoy working with other people,” she said. “After graduation, I’d like to go to graduate school and study to become a physician’s assistant.”

And while to some this may seem like a difficult path consisting of years of heady lectures and late nights in the library, Barron doesn’t seem too worried. Most likely this is because she seems to have uncovered the secret to success, and she learned it that first day of Rook Week at Norwich.

“In order to get through this place you have to be determined to apply yourself,” Barron said. “If you want to get through it you have to want to do it, you can’t just go through the phases.”
