Joseph Landry

Lifestyle: Corps of Cadets
Majors: Physics, mathematics

Although just twenty-two years old, Joseph Landry has capitalized on the many academic and leadership opportunities that Norwich has afforded him since arriving on campus four years ago. He knew he wanted to major in physics, but after witnessing the small class sizes and first-rate facilities during his first year, Landry decided to take on mathematics as a double major his sophomore year.

I came to Norwich because the classes are small. The upper level physics classes are pretty much one-on-one with the professors and the labs are really impressive.

He also knew he wanted leadership training, and by his junior year he was named sergeant cadre in the University’s Bravo Company. This year, the Greenville, N.H. native moved up another link in the chain of command by assuming the responsibilities of executive officer (XO) for Foxtrot Company. And not surprisingly, he knows that these accomplishments are a direct result of his choice to cross the Connecticut River and attend Norwich for his education.

“I came to Norwich because the classes are small. The upper level physics classes are pretty much one-on-one with the professors and the labs are really impressive,” Landry said. “And at a lot of other schools they have the hundred-pound brains, but they don’t have the leadership training that Norwich offers.”

Now just shy of graduating, Landry says he’s planning on pursuing graduate work in the field of physics. And judging by his senior project – a 10-foot-diameter radio telescope that allows for the viewing of radio waves emitted from hydrogen clouds wafting around the galaxy – Landry shouldn’t have much trouble landing a spot in a premier graduate physics program. But no matter where he winds up after leaving The Hill, Landry says his connection to Norwich will always remain a strong part of his life.

“We become like a family,” he said, “the bonds you make at Norwich are forever.”
