Service
Staff will attempt to answer questions pertaining to the history of NU, the development of policies or procedures, and/or the history of programs, organizations and individuals connected with the University.
The following information services are provided whenever possible:
- We will answer requests for a specific piece of information from our holdings
- We will copy specific information from our holdings
- We will provide guidance on potential sources of information and explain how to use these sources
NUASC staff is willing to work on cooperative programs with faculty that increase the use of the University’s archival holdings and to provide instructional guidance for students
We provide access to unrestricted materials on equal terms to all researchers who abide by the rules and regulations of NUASC.
Equipment
Laptops and photographic equipment may be used with permission of the staff as long as it does not disturb other researchers or compromise the preservation of materials. Users are responsible for the security of all personal equipment and materials brought into the Reading Room.
Reproduction
Some materials may be photocopied or scanned in accordance with the limits of the copyright act. Most copies/scans may be made by staff only. NUASC reserves the right to set restrictions to protect fragile or rare materials.
Circulation
NUASC materials are used in the Reading Room only and do not circulate.
Reading Room
The Reading Room is supervised at all times when materials are in use. Study space is at a premium and staff may need to limit the number of researchers using reading room at one time.
Stacks
Materials are housed in climate controlled stacks. These storage areas are restricted to staff only. Staff will retrieve materials as needed.
Handling of Materials
In order to safeguard unique and valuable materials, all researchers are requested to use pencil and to handle all materials with care.
Restricted Records
Unprocessed collections will not be made available to any individual or office except the donor or office of origin.
Access to some records may be restricted by the donor or the office of origin:
- Records of the NU Board of Trustees are restricted for 25 years from date of creation.
- Records of the President of NU are restricted for 25 years from end of term in office as dated from the inauguration of his/her successor.
Three business days notice is required for access to these two restricted record groups.
NU Publications Index Project
This pilot project was undertaken to create a historical serials index of Norwich University's Reveille, April 1860 - December 1893, and Record, July 1908 - May 1913. The Reveille was a student publication printed regularly from 1882 to 1922, and intermittently in the 1860s and 1870s. The Record is a publication produced by NU for its alumni since 1908. Click here for a PDF of the index.
