Resources
The Kreitzberg Library is a full-service academic library, open seven days a week during the fall and spring semesters. The Library contains more than 240,000 books, about 800 printed periodical titles, and is a selective depository for Federal government publications. The Norwich University Archives and Special Collectionss area on the fifth floor includes rare books and primary and unique source materials relating to military history, the history of Vermont, and the history of Norwich University. The Library subscribes to many general, professional, and specialized online databases, which include indexes and access to more than 4,000 full-text online titles. Students also have access through Interlibrary Loan to millions of resources held at other libraries.
Services
The Library promotes research and scholarship. Professional library staff provide individual and group library instruction, both on-site and via electronic access, to library information resources. Library professionals also help identify, locate, and retrieve books and information for research, study and recreational reading from any source regardless of the location.
Facilities
The Kreitzberg Library is also a great place for students to study, in either quiet individual or group study areas. The Mezzanine Computer Lab provides access to the campus network for students' computing tasks. The Learning Support Center and the Counseling and Psychological Services are also located in the Kreitzberg Library.
History
The students and faculty have enjoyed the use of a library at Norwich University since its inception by Captain Alden Partridge as the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy. The first librarian, John Holbrook, reported in 1827 that the library housed 1,100 volumes to serve a student body of 252.
Norwich University and its library have grown together. Alumnus and trustee General Grenville Dodge enlisted the aid of Andrew Carnegie in financing a library on the Upper Parade. Dedicated in 1908 as Carnegie Hall, the upper floors of the reinforced concrete building housed the library, and the lower floors housed the new electrical engineering department. In 1941, the electrical engineers moved to their own building, and the library expanded to include the lower floors.
Under the presidency of General Ernest N. Harmon, a period of steadily increasing enrollment, the library was modernized in 1953 and enlarged in 1961 to 27,000 square feet, twice its former size. To honor the principal donor of these much-needed changes, the library was renamed the Henry Prescott Chaplin Memorial Library.
The Norwich University Library is presently housed in the 58,000 square foot Kreitzberg Library, named for principal donors Barbara and Fred Kreitzberg (Class of '57). The Library was designed by Perry, Dean, Rogers & Partners of Boston, MA, and was completed in 1993 at a cost of $8.1 million.
