For the English major, the student must complete EN101, EN102, EN201, EN202, and a minimum of twelve English courses (36 degree credits) above EN202. The student must earn a grade of "C" or higher in all of these courses, except EN101 or EN102, in one of which a grade of "D" may be earned. The twelve courses above EN202 are as follows:
- EN225 (Survey of English Literature I);
- EN226 (Survey of English Literature II);
- EN227 (Survey of American Literature I);
- EN203, 204, or 306 (Advanced Writing);
- EN 333 or 334 (Shakespeare);
- One course in American literature from the group numbered EN391 through EN399;
- One course in British literature from the group numbered EN370 through EN379;
- EN450 (Senior Seminar)
- Four additional English courses numbered above 202.
Although EN101 and EN102 are required for all freshmen, those with satisfactory scores on the Advanced Placement Examination of the College Entrance Examination Board and those who earn sufficiently high scores on special departmental examinations may petition to receive credit in, or permission to substitute other courses for, English 101 and/or 102. Students requiring instruction in English additional to that received in the freshman sequence must enroll in EN005 during their first semester at Norwich.
The following English courses are considered literature courses: EN201, 202, 205, 206, 210, 220, 225, 226, 227, 228, 250, 251, 270, 320 through 399, and 406; EN420 and 425 may be designated as literature courses during pre-registration periods.
