103. Introduction to Drawing 3 Credits

An introduction to the drawing methods of exploring and analyzing the physical world of form using a variety of media. Emphasis is placed on studying the visual elements of line, shape, space, and light as means of approaching this inquiry. Three hour studio, one hour lecture per week.

104. Introduction to Visual Design 3 Credits

An introduction to the basic principles and techniques of visual design. Emphasis is placed on relationships of figure/ground, rhythm/repetition, unity/variety, scale/proportion, texture, and the expressive potential of color. Three hour studio, one hour lecture per week.

105. Introduction to Painting 3 Credits

An introductory course designed to develop fundamental skills in painting, involving exploration of techniques in oil, tempera, acrylic, watercolor, and/or pastel. Attention is given to developing an expressive, handling of painting media and the dynamic potential of color. Three hour studio, one hour lecture per week.

106. Introduction to Printmaking 3 Credits

An introduction to the technique and process of black-and-white relief printing. Linoleum and wood are explored as media. Emphasis is placed on developing technical skills and exploring the unique expressive character of the printmaking process. Three hour studio, one hour lecture per week.

107. Introduction to Photography 3 Credits

An introduction to photographic principles-composition, camera control, black and white film developing of negatives and transparencies, black and white printing, and lighting considerations. A single-lens reflex 35mm camera is required. Three hour studio, one hour lecture per week.

200. Intermediate Studio 3 Credits

This course level is for students pursuing further study in drawing, design, painting, photography, and printmaking. The focus is on developing more complex levels of thought, technical mastery of media, and individual initiative in project content and completion. Prerequisites: SA100-level studio in area of study or permission of the instructor. 6 hours of studio per week.

205. Water Media 3 Credits

This course is designed to develop skills in the use of water media. The media include: watercolor, acrylic, casein, gouache, and egg tempera. Attention is given to each student's unique and expressive handling of the media. Six hours of studio per week. Normally off e red in alternate spring semesters. Pre requisite: SA103, or instructor's permission.

210. The Portrait 3 Credits

This course provides the perceptual and conceptual means to construct the human face as a portrait in three dimensions. The structure of the head is examined as anatomy and as form. Six hours of studio per week. Normally offered in alternate spring semesters. Prerequisite: SA103, or instructor's permission.

265. Life Drawing 3 Credits

This course begins the process of developing the ability to observe and draw the human figure as a three-dimensional form, emphasizing proportional accuracy, foreshortening, detail-mass relationships and the use of light and shadow, and to draw the figure as a convincing volumetric and spatial form. Six hours of studio per week. Prerequisite: SA103, or instructor's permission.

300. Advanced Studio 3 Credits

This course is for students who have completed SA100 and SA200 level courses in their area of study and have a demonstrated ability to be self-directed and self-motivated in their purposes and goals. Six hours of studio per week. Prior to registration, the student must submit in writing, and the instructor must accept, a proposed course of study
