Submitting a Proposal
Student Travel Grants
submission deadline: based on activity schedule
Student Travel Grants provide funding to students for presentations and active participation at workshops, seminars, conferences, special courses, and professional meetings. Grants are funded up to 100% for registration costs, fees, meals, lodging, and transportation to support presentations. Students may apply for funds retroactively within a given budget year.
Applying for Funds
- Complete a Student Travel Grant Form (Appendix A).
- Have the form signed by their Faculty Sponsor and School Dean.
- Send the form, along with information about the activity (brochure showing costs), to the Director.
To receive a percentage of the allocated funds as a travel advance prior to the activity, submit an Application for Travel Advance Form to the Director a minimum of three weeks in advance of the activity (forms available from Student Research Committee members and School secretaries; see sample Appendix B).
Note: If an advance is received and the activity is not completed, the student must return all advanced funds.
Final Accounting
- Prepare a list of expenses for the activity on the Travel Expense Voucher within 10 days after completion of the activity (forms available in School offices; see sample Appendix C). This voucher must have the following:
- an itemized list of all expenses (in the case of mileage, include the number of miles traveled);
- original receipts for all expenses (including meals);
- an advance payment check stub, if received;
- a copy of the letter authorizing funds from the Director; and
- the signatures of the Department Chair and School Dean.
- Send the voucher, with all the attachments, to the Director.
Research Grants
submission deadline: none
Students, in collaboration with their sponsoring faculty, may request funds for research and projects to help defray expenses directly incurred in such activities.
Proposals are submitted to the Director following the format outlined in Appendix D, accompanied by a Student Grant Request Form (Appendix E).
Summer Research Fellowships
submission deadline: Feb. 15, 2008
Two Summer Research Fellowships programs exist, both of which are awarded on a competitive basis to support research, creative or scholarly projects, not for work leading to completion of the student’s degree. The two programs are described below:
- The first program will fund research teams consisting of one Faculty Research Fellow and one Student Research Fellow who are working full time on a research project and who apply with two separate but integrated proposals. The student project should be a self-contained component of the faculty project. Preference will be given to Regular Faculty.
- The second program will fund Student Research Fellows who apply independently with the support of a Faculty Research Mentor who will be engaged in supervising the student’s work.
Student and Faculty Research Fellows in these programs receive stipends so they can devote full time to the project; Faculty Mentors also receive a stipend. The Committee reviews the proposals for each program and submits a rank-ordered list to the VPAA and Dean of the Faculty for final approval.
Application Policies and Procedures:
- Proposals (nine copies) are submitted to the Director following the format outlined in Appendix D and are accompanied by a Grant Request Form (Appendix E). All proposals are to be submitted by Feb. 15.
- Proposals are evaluated based on guidelines in Appendix D and the:
- quality of the proposal;
- demonstration of commitment to the proposal;
- necessary qualifications for its completion;
- contribution to the applicant’s discipline;
- benefit to Norwich University; and
- feasibility of the time frame.
- It is expected that a minimum of ten weeks be devoted to the project. Recipients will submit a report of activities to the Director within one month after completion of the project, including materials for publication on the Student Research Web site. Recipients are expected to participate in the Summer Research Lecture Series during the following school year.
On-Campus Activities
submission deadline: none
The Committee assists the Director in arranging for colloquia, seminars, conferences, workshops, and study groups to promote the goals of the Student Research Program.
Students and their faculty sponsors may request funding at any time from the Director to support On-Campus Activities.
